**Summer Transfer Thread: News, Rumours and Speculation**

Well that isn't strictly true BaZ is it. You could have bought a new Forward instead of spaffing £18m on Glenn Johnson and got Arbelo signed up to a new contract

Of course it's true. We offered him a new contract but he wants to go back to Spain. He wanted to go back last summer but Rafa managed to persuade him to stay for 1 more season. With his contract up next summer it would be foolish to stop him from leaving now.

Yeah Arby wanted to go back to the hotter climate, can't blame him for that.

Think Johnson is a better player anyway.

Is there something funny about someone trying to recover from two serious operations

Yes, that is exactly what I am laughing at... His misfortune... No, I'm not laughing at that.

I'm laughing at the situation that every time he is close to a comeback, people still think that he will meet that date. Then every time its another 3 months. Then another, then another. Last I heard he wasn't going to be back until Christmas anyway, so to me it wasn't even a headline?

I said we wouldnt see him in action this year didnt I? ;)

Now we dont have a choice but to sign another decent midfielder, both Carrick and Anderson are wasted trying to play a holding role.

I thought that was the only position that Anderson could play since he's not good enough with the ball to be a good AM but he can run loads and be aggressive so makes a good DM

We won't, we have Anderson, Carrick, Scholes, Giggs, Fletcher, Gibson all in there. Regardless of how good you think they are, can't see Fergie signing another CM until Giggs and Scholes retire/he sells 1/2 of the others.

Nope, he's played in AMC for both Gremio and Porto.

Anderson had flashes of brilliance but whenever I saw him he was often the weak link the midfield no matter were he played. Putting far too many passes astray and control of the ball was poor (however he did have a few good games,t hats why I'm not saying "Anderson is Crap"). I guess that will come with time and training.

Gibson, Carrick, Anderson, Scholes, Giggs are all offensive midfielders.

Scholes and Giggs didnt cut it against decent midfields last year, so we should be happy going up against the likes of liverpool (who battered us in the midfield twice last year) with one player in Fletcher who can do a job there.

He's still young, problem is, he cant be given matches to improve when you are side who is looking to win every game.
He is still better than Fletcher was at his age.

Fergie likes playing both Carrick and Anderson in a defensive role though. I agree with you, I think we need a solid defensive midfielder now that Hargreaves is..unavailable. I just don't think it will happen. Not sure who we would get either, I guess Toure is the best option available.

Sort of on the same topic, what happened to everyone going after Veloso this summer?

Yeah I know he used to play AM but I was under the impression he wasn't good enough in the prem at AM so he got demoted to an easier role

'easier' is a bit questionable, I can name more good AMC than I can DMC. I think it's just because it's where we've needed him, especially as Scholes and Giggs haven't had the pace to break down opposition play as much and players like Ronaldo haven't tracked back as well, Andersons energy and pace has been very useful in negating the ability of players like Fabregas and Gerrard. Another factor is confidence, Anderson's confidence in the final third has been rock bottom for a while now, he just needs to get that goal really. He does have an eye for a pass though and has set up some great goals in an attacking role.

Maybe with Ronaldo gone, there might be a bit more balance in the side, perhaps we will return to a solid 4-4-2 with only one flying winger as opposed to trying to play 2.

Yeah, pre season it's definitely looked more 4-4-2. Fletcher has played on the right the most but I think that's just until Valencia starts playing. He should offer us for more defensive ability down that side. Actually with Obertan and Valencia joining, Tosic and Nani both looking good in pre season, I'm feeling far more confident about our wingers this season.

Hargreaves potentially could make it back this side of the decade, hopefully. Hes top quality Dm player who can make the job at right wing/rightback easily if needed, instead of having a class player like Rooney at left wing plus copes great in 4-5-1 etc unlike some. 4-4-2 has indeed been used all preseason, good stuff from Owen/Berba link ups, but tonights the Audi cup which is worth watching if anyones bored tonight. United vs Boca jnr's, & AC Milan vs Bayern. Finals day after.
