Good News, he's a good player, works hard and will play anywhere to help the team, hopefully we can buy some better midfielders so he can play up front more often.

Admittedly not many, and I didn't say that he did not play the same position as Xabi, merely that he doesn't play the same role; he's a lot more forward thinking which, while good in a way, would still mean something of a re-shuffle, possibly meaning that Gerrard may have to take on a little more responsibility defensively.
He's a fantastic passer and playmaker, and if we were looking for somebody to play a more advanced role he'd be up there, but he can't replace Alonso in the same role, which is what we ideally need (although I doubt we can find).
Good point about him being able to work on his stamina and strength; I agree with this to an extent again, but also feel that we need somebody who can slot in as fast as possible next season. If Van der Vaart spends his first half of the season playing in fits and starts off the bench while he gets used to the English game, that means that we get stuck with Lucas...
And yes, I do play too much FM
EDIT: I'm with you on Cattermole, think that if we can get him at the right price as a 3rd or 4th DM (rather than 2nd behind/alongside Masch) he'd be a decent buy. A lot of potential there.
Granted he's not better than Alonso but what i found funny was eveyone slating him for being ****! Unfortunaltley Liverpool are'nt going to find someone better than Alonso, what they need to do is fill the shoes as much as they can.
Cattermole would be a excellent signing for Liverpool, quote me on that please!

Yes, he is a more foward thinking player. Like i said tho, he played the same position as Xabi at Hamberg, he played some brilliant football for them there. I personally dont think Vaart would be a good signing for Liverpool tho. Actually, i dont know whether he would be a good player for them :s

Yes he would be more ideal than Vaart. He's little hidden gem! Can turn the game in a flash. Great impact player aswell!
Sneijder and Cattermole would be good use of the money. Sneijder can player out on the wing aswell which would be very handy, very usefull if Riera is doing nothing, put Sneijder out left, get him to come in on the inside and bang a 30 yarder!

Van der vaart is deffo leaving Madrid as he doesn't even have a squad number this season. He wouldn't be a direct replacement for Alonso in a like for like sense but who would be?
I have rated him since his Ajax days and would love him in a red shirt. We have needed someone to unlock defences for years as it always seems the final third of the pitch is where we are lacking creativity.

Sit being the operative word, the guy was shot a couple of seasons ago ....it was painful to watch him play in Italy, it's a slower game there and he still looks off the pace. Apart from the dressing room i don't see what value he can bring us tbh.
If this is the only real transfer news for Arsenal it's a ******* joke lol, what next Overmars and Petit to come in for half a season.
I hope Wenger is just playing coy about new signings to swing better deals because we're still well short, the squad was thin on quality last season after injuries. We're not far away from a great squad with huge talent ....just shore up the defense please AW ....ohhh and grab Huntelaar
Has he not been given a number for this season? Didnt know that, surely he will be part of the Liverpool deal then? Will be intresting to see how he plays in the PL, he needs to sort his stamina out tho.

Yes mate im aware of this, was just comparing the two as obviously they're both jumping ship from newcastle. I'd be much happier with the spurs offer for Bassong compared to martins going to wolfsburg, very surprised in the lack of interest in martins.
I think Bassong is a decent signing, given he takes time to learn from King and Woodgate
