**Summer Transfer Thread: News, Rumours and Speculation**

Rubbish. Keane is proven quality. Rafa couldn't manage him, but to my mind probably didn't want him anyway.

I always felt this too. Keane for me works very well with a hold up striker, ala Berbatov who has the footwork to find balls through to Keane who can utilise his pace to beat the opposition. With Torres who is clearly Liverpools main attacking threat Keane wasn't able to be effectively used. With Torres doing all the work and producing an end product he didn't fit in to Rafas system.

Does anyone think Pool will actually play 2 strikers for once this season rather than relying on Gerrard playing every position?

Why would we break up what was the best partnership in the league last season and the back end of the season before?
Someone on RAWK made a good point about medicals, do players ever fail them? Saha passed his at Everton and Downing passed his on crutches at Villa!

According to ESPN it's 51 league starts in 5 years.

Medicals are just there to check for long standing or unknown problems. Is there anything to suggest that Aquilani is a player that picks up constant little niggles like a Saha or Degen? From what I've read he's had 2 major injuries which is why he's barely played.

You also have to remember that he's only been in Roma's first team squad for 5 seasons and was in and out of the side for the first season. 47 league starts (71 in all comps + 37 sub appearances) from the last 4 seasons isn't that bad when he's had 2 major injuries.

Are you sure? You had Keane and still insisted on playing Gerrard as the second ST with Keane left to warm the bench.

I don't agree with eggyoke, Benitez won't want to break the Gerrard/Torres partnership up. Keane was never going to be first choice. As soon as the likes of Mascherano returned from the Olympics and Torres got fit, Keane was always going to be warming the bench. The fact that he played **** for 4 months just confirmed it.

:( After a quick look at his history it is a bit uneasing if we have payed £15m for him.

He may have shown signs of quality in the past but to bring such a player to the prem. league in a midfield position is just...

Anyone think it could be a jerk reaction to Alonso handing in his transfer request? Its possible Benitez thought he had a good chance of keeping him.

Isnt Aquilani supposed to be injured until september as well?

Reportedly yea. He's still recovering from his ankle problem that has caused him problems for the last season and a bit.

You do know it's only Marca that are saying we've signed him? It appears that we're after him but nothing has happened yet.

As for it being a jerk reaction to Alonso wanting to leave; i doubt it very much. Rafa's known since the end of the last season that Alonso wanted to join Real.

Hopefully we get a good fee for him. far too lightweight for the Prem, he's built like Walcott. Need beefing up before he can consider first team for Villa.

He'll be able to do a job straight away. He's a little brash but other than that he'll do well. Not many players will have the legs or the ability to old-man him, they won't get close enough to him.

If it's less than £10m Villa have themselves a bargain.
