**Summer Transfer Thread: News, Rumours and Speculation**

He's gonna sign a turnip?

Not just any turnip, it'll be shaped like a thingy.

Big news at Ewood Park today, Nathan Ellington has been handed a trial :p. Maybe Sams trying to get one or two strikers training with us whilst we wait for Kalinics work permit decision to come through...

Aquilani has spent more time injured in his career then playing and Poulson is nothing more then average. No thanks.

Defour or Hamsik would be better options.

That's not true about Aquilani; he didn't play every week in his first couple of seasons because there were players ahead of him, it's only been the past couple of years where he's had a thigh and now an ankle injury. As I said earlier in this thread, if we are to sign him then the club will have to be satisfied that he's got no long standing problems.

As for Poulson, average is slightly unfair. Admittedly he's far from a great player but with Gerrard playing further forward we could do with an extra CM and like I said, I'd much rather have Poulson filling in for Masch/whoever we sign.

I haven't seen a great deal of Hamsik but from what I have seen, he doesn't look anything special and Napoli want crazy money too. I like the look of Defour but I'm not sure we're after him though.

SSN are reporting we are close to signing Bassong from Newcastle. Whilst I know we urgently need a CB there must be a better option for £10m surely?

Yeah I think Poulsen's more the type to fill in for Masch, he's definitely not an Alonso replacement.

I think everyone agrees we wont find another Alonso in terms of quality with the ability to change the rhythm of the team, but I would like to see Benitez bring in an older head to partner Mascherano who I think would benefit a lot next to that type of player. Someone similar to what Hamann and McAllister did, experience and uses the ball wisely. Saying that though I cant think of many players that could do that.

Vieira could fill that role though not sure if that is what we really need

I don't see why we couldn't get Poulsen and Defour for £15-20 mil to be hones; Poulsen will be going cheap and, coming from the Belgian league, Defour's cost shouldn't be more than £10-14 mil. As a 3rd or 4th central midfielder, and particularly as cover for Masch, Poulsen would be well worth the money. Would leave us, hopefully, with £10 mil to pinch Chamakh from under the Gunners' nose :D

No way!

I can't think of a direct replacement for Alonso (who'd be available anyway) but I don't think that's too big an issue. Given that Masch is always going to be there, having Alonso (or an Alonso type player) alongside him sometimes restricted us. Ideally we'll sign somebody who can do the Alonso/playmaker job as close to as well as Alonso done it but also be more mobile and a greater attacking threat.

I was saying if we wanted to do what eggyoke suggested, I did add that I didn't think that was what we needed though

Yea, I realised. Just wanted to make my objections clear though :)

Agree entirely regarding signing Poulsen + a first choice CM. With Gerrard now practically playing entirely further forward we need 4 CM's (especially if Lucas is one of them). Decent price and would do a decent job. Defour may not come as cheap as you think though. Fellaini cost Everton £15-16m and Defour's regarded higher than he was.

Hopefully we'd have more than £10m left over too. Bearing in mind that Keane's money would have paid for Johnson, we should have the ~£8m from Arbeloa, Leto + a couple of kids that have been sold and possibly more if and when Dossena and Voronin go.

Tbh, I've got a small amount of hope that he'll improve but I wouldn't want to rely on him to play regularly if somebody picked up a major injury.

Ironically 3 of his decent performances came away to Arsenal, Utd and Chelsea (cl). Hopefully he's bulked up over the summer and has learnt to tackle.

There's been stories linking him with us, not sure we're after him though. He certainly was impressive when we played Liege in the CL qualifiers.
agreed. Really sad to see alonso go though. He's just one those players you could rely on giving a good performance every match. He was great in Europe too, it won't be the same without him.

SSN reporting VDS could be out for up to 8 weeks after finger surgery. I guess Foster is gonna get more play time than he expected sooner then, I hope he is up to it.

I think you will see Fergies intentions over the next two games (Valencia & Chelsea) to see who will take the Goalkeeping spot in VDS abscence

What a ****

What a ****

Try reading what he actually said Rotty, what he says is probably right though, you'll not repeat the success you had last season and Chelsea are the main title threats. :p

Let's see how Rafa 'I only talk about my team' Benitez responds to it. ;)

He's still a **** though :p

:D :p

It's good that the 'mind' games have started early, it'll be interesting now Van Der Sar is out for the next 8 weeks, Foster will have to step up. Roll on next weekend!

I wonder what intentions Ferguson has arranging a friendly with Valencia tonight. :D ;)
