**Summer Transfer Thread: News, Rumours and Speculation**

He did.

It was 5m Euros not £'s and I'll think you'll find that most deals are structured in a similar way. For instance, we only received around £4m up front when we sold Crouch. IIRC, it came out during the Barry/Liverpool saga last summer that there's an unwritten rule that deals between EPL clubs are paid for over 3 years.

Ok Euros (which doesnt really make head nor tails - its still a tiny amount of the full worth of cash deal before performance clauses come in)

I wasnt doubting the structure - I was amazed at how small the value is actually upfront , with most top clubs (even for a relatively unknown/non star player) the weight would be payment up front with a few million a season later

Watched some videos of this asian guy that Liverpool are being linked with, Keisuke Honda. Looks very good in the videos, looks like a very tricky pacy guy with good feet, likes to run at people..good from a deadball situation and a decent crosser of the ball. Not sure how serious the link is, but tbh I really think he could be a good signing if we got him.

Not a transfer but nowhere to put it; somehow Spurs have managed to convince the EPL/FA to allow Bassong to play vs Liverpool this weekend depsite signing for Spurs before his 2 game suspension ended.

Wonder who Harry had to pay for that.

It does seem a small amount upfront but as I said previously, I don't think it's that unusual. We only paid around 1/3 of the transfer fee for Keane upfront and received a similar proportion of the Crouch fee upfront too.

With the exception of the Ronaldo and Alonso deals (not sure about Kaka etc), where both Liverpool and Utd demanded that Real pay the entire fee upfront, it does appear that a lot of deals are pretty evenly spread out over ~3 years.

Actually, the registration for him only went throught today so the last game of his suspension went down as Newcastle's game at the weekend.

He signed for you before completing his suspension but you delayed his registration so he could play. Technicalities over common sense as usual from the FA

Oh well, he'll wish he was suspended once Torres has finished with him on Sunday :p

Oh and Liverpool have sold Adam Hammill to Barnsley for 'a significant six-figure sum'.

Simple I thought.

Just needed to delay handing the papers to the FA. What's wrong with that?

Would have been mugs to have done it any other way.

He was one of the players a lot of Liverpool supporters thought would make it in to the first team. Don't know why Rafa never gave him a chance.

yeah I've heard that before. Also heard reports of him playing pretty well in pre-season also, there must be a buy back clause in his contract.

From what I'm told it's actually fairly common in recent years, at the end of the day the numbers are still the same, clubs just like to spread payments as they can't always stump up 8-figure sums on short notice. I may be wrong but I vaguely remember that there is actually some recent 'law'/regulation about it stating that clubs must agree to accept spread payments, although how that could be enforced I don't know (since the selling club could simply refuse to sell unless the cash is paid up front!).

IIRC the final amount of the Rio Ferdinand transfer is actually far lower than what you commonly see reported (£29.1m), because Leeds renegotiated the deal to boost their cash flow by getting early payment, in reality it ended up being more like £27m.

He was given a 2 game ban but has only served a 1 game ban. That's what is wrong.

Fair play to Spurs for taking advantage of the EPL/FA's incompetence though.

The only reason why some thought this was because he's a local lad. He's got a bit of ability but no more than somebody like El Zhar, less in fact and would have never made it with us. He's a show pony; lots of fancy tricks and the odd decent strike but lacks any real end product.

He's reportedly got a massive attitude problem too; he always gave me the impression that he thought he was far better than he actually was and reportedly 'took it as an insult to have to train with the reserves'. He's meant to already have a gambling problem also.

@Tombstone: Pacheco and Nemeth featured at the start of pre-season but once the likes of Torres were back, there wasn't much opportunity for them to play. Saying that, I'd have rather they got some minutes than Voronin, although that may have just be a case of putting him in the shop window.

Likewise..particularly Pacheco.

The second was against WBA.

Sebastien Bassong will be available for selection for our Premier League season opener against Liverpool on Sunday.

The defender was handed a two-match suspension after being sent off whilst playing for Newcastle United against Fulham last May.

However, given he served the first game of his ban against Aston Villa on the final day of the previous campaign as a Newcastle United player, it meant the suspension continued to apply to Newcastle United games and was therefore satisfied when his former club visited West Bromwich Albion on the opening day of the Championship season on Saturday.
