**Summer Transfer Thread: News, Rumours and Speculation**

I personally think people are being too hard on Hughes

I think Man City have a good chance of making the top four (esp IF Fabregas is tempted back to Barca) its more a case of whether the money spent on players justify the position - ie too close to positions 5 and 6 at the end of the season, to be anything other than luck of the draw

How ever much MH has spent in the last few seasons, its still quite a step below Man Utd and Chelsea and before selling Alonso Liverpool as well

are you going off net spend then? because why would you take alonso off but not ronaldo? or are you going on gross spend? either way i'd bet that citys spending over the last 3-4 seasons is easily up there with the others.

Just heard Agger's back injury could be career threatening....

Oh and the irony about the Lescott saga and Everton feeling hard done by when a club with more money comes in for one of their players isn't lost on me. Wonder how all those lower league clubs felt when Everton came poaching for players like...oh...wait...Lescott

What are you on about they didn't unsettle or poach lescott they made an offer to the club and wolves sold him. The deal almost fell through because Everton were not happy about the state of his knee. The fee was reduced and paid in installments because of the extent of knee damage on the scans.

Hardly the same as if Wolves kept saying he wasn't for sale and we had kept bumping the money up and publically having our manager talk about a deal when the selling club keep saying they are not interested.

Personally for 20 mill I hope he ****s off. He really isn't 10 million good let alone 20.

Officials from the Championship club claimed at the weekend Lescott had passed a medical but subsequent reports in the Merseyside press suggested that is not the case.

Everton's doctors are believed to be concerned about the condition of Lescott's knee, as the 23-year-old has a history of problems with the joint.

Wolves chief executive Jez Moxey is keen to push the deal through, but admitted that may not happen for some time.

"The ball is now in Everton's court," Moxey told his club's official website.

"Their medical team first saw Joleon on Thursday and then again on Friday. It is now Monday and transfers normally happen quicker than this.

"But Everton have informed us they want more time and we have to respect that."

I have to say I'd be strongly in favour of a wage cap, I have been for a good few years now. Especially before footballers completely lose touch with the people they play infront of.

I think they lost touch a long time ago really, a salary cap would make things extremely interesting but the big clubs will never swing for that.

I am on about the irony of a club with a fatter cheque book coming in for a player, the player wanting to leave and the small club having little to no power to do much about it. Seems its fine for Everton to snap up players from poorer clubs but when one tries it on with them it's not cricket.

Its nothing like the same when a club is wanting or willing to sell and when one club says he's not for sale.

The nature of the business is if a club makes an offer and it's accepted then thats how clubs survive. Repeatedly putting in offers and using the press when a club say a player is off limits is completely different imo.

I bet a lot of the stuff going to the press has been leaked by Everton to bump the price up. If the player was not for sale at any price, Moyes didn't need to say 'that's not how business is done' in his press conference he just needed to say 'he isn't for sale, end of'. It's obvious he will go, just Everton are dragging their heels for more cashola. Granted, the public courting of Lescott when Moyes said he isn't for sale was probably not gentlemanly contact by Hughes but that's the way a lot of the deals seem to be going now...

What injury?

The one to his back

Cattermole story may have legs...nationals are reporting a medical this afternoon

if it goes through we will certainly have a tough tackling midfield

Villa and Everton have been doing incredibly well but it's going to take a long time or a lot of money (barring Arsenal completely falling apart) before either could establish themselves as a regular member of the top 4. You only have to look at last season where both Everton and Villa had excellent seasons yet they still finished 9 & 10 points behind Arsenal, who had a poor season by their standards.

As I said above, I'm not saying that I expect City to walk straight into the top 4 and like you say, it could go all wrong but with the amount of money they have, if 1 side is going to split the top 4 up consistently then they're the only side I can see possibly doing it.

Completely agree, while I think Villa and Everton have done fantastically well to establish themselves as top 10 sides, I think if they want to try and realistically take on the top four, they need a massive cash investment.

Manchester City, at current have a good team, and a good manager. Nothing more. They however, have the cash. I don't expect them to walk in to the top four this season.

It's all down to money, the top four had the most and got the best players, now Manchester City have the most, and are playing catch up, when they catch up, who knows ?

How on earth did that happen?

It's a problem he's had for a while, which flares up every now and then. It flared up a few weeks back which is why he hardly played this pre-season.

Rafa's said that he should be fit by Sunday but considering that he didn't play in the practise match with Skrtel today, that seems unlikely.

He's been out since the end of last season. Picked it up player for Denmark in Feb last year and it flared up ahead of the first pre-season friendly again.

Like I say, it's possible he may not play again...(when I say not play again- he may- it's just the injury is likely to be there for keeps and continually flare up, heard that in the office this morning)

Sunderland trying to buy their way too success, disgusting.

Newcastle are doing the right thing, not bothering to buy anyone (don't really need anyone) and letting the youth flourish.
