Summer Transfer Window 2017/18 - Rumours & Signings

With this talk of players potential to flop from the PL and abroad when they move clubs I was just thinking. How many players that have moved within the PL have actually flopped when everyone expected them to either maintain or improve their level at their new club.

I really can't think of that many.

Plenty have flopped but I think most of them have either been an obvious square peg in a round hole or have fallen foul of politics/managerial changes. Anyone got any good flops that fit this criteria?

Torres to Chelsea springs to mind.

He was on the decline and was never likely to be worth anything like the 50m paid for him.

The question was "How many players that have moved within the PL have actually flopped when everyone expected them to either maintain or improve their level at their new club"

I'd suggest Chelsea paying £50 million for him he was expected to at least maintain his scoring record. Whether he was worth £50 million is another discussion entirely (in hindsight, clearly not).

Torres at his Liverpool peak would be well worth 50 mill, hes was superb. Bit like Michael Owen, never really got back to his best after several injuries.

People who flopped?
Carroll, Sissoko, John Stones off the top of my head.

Well kimmich will play RB and Costa will be off to Juve. I expect Gnabry and possibly Sanchez to go on loan to hoffenheim and work with Nagglesman. Still, the depth and versatility they have is quite amazing

That seems like a ridiculously good deal for Bayern for a player that would easily fetch 60m+ at sale.

You honestly think that's good business for everton? It's terrible business, may have got a little out of him if he'd got the intended boot if fergie stayed at Manu, but he's way past being good enough even for Everton. The whole myth about him being a midfielder when he slowed down has been destroyed, I don't know how much of his wage is being subsidised but it better be a lot. It a backwards step for a team making progress again after clearing out that smiling retard.

I was quite liking Koeman but this is about as stupid a move as I have seen, does he want to slow us down even further? Hell sign Giroud and give us the slowest front line in the football league. 50k fine, let us stick him on the bench for the odd bit of impact when everyone else is dead, but 150k, Pathetic.

Yes I do actually, overall comparison of stats still puts Rooney at some value for Everton, And considering they are saying he went on a free I cant believe you think its terrible business for a club the size of Everton to sign Rooney, Even away from the playing side his merchandise value in foreign countries etc is worth it alone I would imagine.

As for Giroud Everton can have him :)

What merchandise value, his value is because he's a Manu player when he was playing well and in the England squad. These flip flopping Asians that support Leicester one season, Chelsea the next and Manu on weekends are not all of a sudden going to create huge amounts of money in "foreign" lands because he's moved to Everton and neither playing in Europe or Internationals. Yes he was free to an extent, maybe we would have got more for Lukaku if this wasn't in the offing, but he's also the highest paid player in our history and his form and ability doesn't put him anywhere near that value. When Fergie wanted shot, I would have taken him, right now it's a complete waste of money even in wages. He's held up and held back England and United for a few seasons, why on earth would he not to the same to us?

I can't think of many times a huge player like Rooney has got to the end of the road at a top club, moved on/down and recreated anything like form over a season. That's why they usually end up in America.

He's definitely one of the highest earning brands in the UK. He will surely help but he isn't going to be making massive money for the club. Its just a decent story isn't it, kid that moved to help the club's monetary survival returns home after 13 years, i know he's earn't a shed load of cash in that time but he'll definitely stick it on the line for Everton. I'll be honest, i'm fascinated to see how he does.

£42m for James? seems pretty good in today's market. That's the thing with the PL, auto premium slap just for being in the premiership.

I wonder if Coman is up for grabs?

Agreed and for someone who was free his value I think will outweigh the wages but only time will tell. Like you I'm interested what happens

It really doesn't work like that...

You wouldn't sell/loan to Bayern if you could get more from someone else. There is obviously more to this than meets the eye. Any team will sell to the highest bidder in almost every situation. They might try to squeeze more form a PL team but they won't say "£42m to you Bayern and £80m to you Man Utd we don't mind which"
