Summer Transfer Window 22/23

At the end of the day, Sterling is a short arse too, and he's scored 10% of his goals with his head. Height clearly isn't as important for headers as people make out!

Obviously he's going to be at a disadvantage for some elements of the game, but i wouldn't dismiss him because of it. Harry Maguire is tall and look at how much we struggle with crosses with him!

Defensive headers and offensive headers are a different kettle of fish. As a small attacker I would wager that the vast majority of Sterlings goals came from crosses placed onto the end of his run where the position and pace of the defender is far more vital than their height.

Defenders are usually criticised for being beaten in the air from more dead-ball situations where its a straight fight of "who can get their head on the ball first or block the other guy". Height and strength then becomes far more important than anything else.

De ligt taking a paycut to go to Bayern, Lisandro 300% salary increase to come to UTD.

This is why we fail.

I just wonder if we'll be asking the same questions as previously:

Why are we buying Leicester's second best CB for so much?
Does Sancho fit? Is he really a top priority?
Is Ronaldo going to suit our system?

Let's hope that the new management team know what they're doing.

After 10 years of turning the corner perhaps this is it?

God, put me in a room with Sigma and The Running Man talking about United and I would be looking for a sharp object after 5 minutes :p

So negative.

I think more criticism is required. Last season was ridiculous. Signing Ole up for so long was ridiculous. Hiring the godfather of modern football then asking him to manage before getting rid of him is ridiculous.

Now we're signing left backs and the world's smallest CB. Chasing big names/being messed about. Ronaldo bigger than the club. Smells of history repeating itself.

I can't see why people are so positive?

I hope you're all right and I'm wrong.

I'm not negative because I think we actually have a top class manager who will change us massively. I have hated watching us under Ole for the most part because the football was so crap in general. Even when we beat a team comfortably on the scoreline we would routinely be outplayed by awful teams.

I don't think our current set of players is that bad. I think we have got rid of quite a few of the posers and people that are more interested in their social media than their team and I am excited to see what the new season brings.

I will reserve the complaining and negativity for the season if things aren't going well. I have low expectations for this first season under ETH but as long as I see some good team football I will be happy.

Oh yeah, i'm not dismissing it being a factor, i'm just not agreeing with the whole "He'll be rubbish in PL due to his height". Assuming he's good at all other areas of defence, shipping a couple of goals from crosses would be negligible.
There are other areas of defending where his size and general physicality matters though, it's not just about defending crosses. How well will he be able to deal with the handful of yard dog sides that go long at every opportunity? Can you imagine if Burnley were still in the PL coming up against a 4 foot cb? They'd have Ashley Barnes sat on him for 90 minutes. You've then got your Antonio's and Toney's of this world who are built like Bull's and even your 6 foot 3, 15 stone CB's regularly struggle to handle.

In a previous post you mentioned that Utd should have enough height in the rest of the side to deal with set plays but in a scenario where he's one of two CB's, who are Utd's aerially dominant players? The other CB, assuming that's Maguire or Varane and then it's Ronaldo who might not be at the club and McTominay and if FDJ signs, does he play every week? With the question mark over Ronaldo's future, Utd are starting to look like a small team already imo.

I'm not saying he will be rubbish, I've barely seen him kick a ball and there has been successful, small CB's in other European League's so it's certainly not impossible that he'll be a decent signing but in the PL it's undoubtedly a risk. Maybe it's just because Liverpool and City have gone and bought big centre forwards this summer but it certainly feels a bit like 20 years ago where most sides have a big, powerful number 9 now and I think a lot of sides will target him physically.

edit: and this whole debate will prove pointless when he ends up lining up in midfield or LB anyway :p

I think as much as a laughing stock United were last season it's very comparable to Newcastle having Bruce as manager for so long. The difference in the players under Howe is amazing.

I think you will see exactly the same in United, players like Rashford, Sancho that should be very good struggled and having them under a manager who has a true style/vision and methodology will be like having new signings in themselves. Not back to the Fergie years but a hell of an improvement on the last 10.

You saw with Rangnick that simply having a manager with a clear vision isn't enough when the players available to him either couldn't or wouldn't buy into that vision. A number of those players have left this summer but there's still the big Ronaldo issue that has the potential to undermine what ETH wants to do.

Talk of him leaving seems to have died down in recent days but I honestly believe it will be a mistake from Utd to keep him next season. It's not just the question marks over whether he can fit into the way ETH wants to play but all the baggage that he comes with. Getting the younger players, like Rashford and Sancho to buy into what ETH wants them to do is far easier when you don't have Ronaldo undermining his decisions by throwing a strop because he's been subbed off or picking up a phantom injury when he's told he's going to be a sub.

I think its a bit more complicated than that. I think that Ronaldo is struggling to find anyone who will pay him silly wages. I think United wouldn't mind him leaving at all. I think ETH would be more than happy to see him go. I think Ronaldo won't go unless he finds the right move and so I think he will be here next season by default.

Yeah I agree with that, however IF they can shift him on, the outlook is so much better.

I struggle to believe that United haven't hashed out the wages with FdJ. By all accounts the wrangling on price was to allow Barca to pay him the "owed" wages as well. If hes really not wanting to come then we should leave it.
