A bit sad really, they've given him the opportunity to leave gracefully and play in a team that doesn't show up his weaknesses so much.I'm really not happy with Maguire.
I know he's entitled to sit and collect his money, does he not care about his career? He won't feature much for us unless we have a lot of injuries. I think we'll sign another centre back so he'll be 5th choice.
He's become a hate figure for a significant section of supporters, and this will make it worse; he will be abused, derided and viewed as avaricious.
Also, he's unlikely to be playing for England either if he's not featuring at all for the club, although Southgate is useless so you never know.
But ultimately, he has woefully underperformed for us since he joined. Was it the clubs fault he started having a fight with Greek police and got arrested? No. His form fell off a cliff after that (wasn't great to start with anyway).
All that said, the club should have just paid him off. £7m is not that big of a deal and him remaining at the club could cause some problems.
He'll play the odd game as injury cover or in cups, his glacial pace will get shown up again, he'll concede goals, and get more boos from the crowd.
It is possible for players to get quicker (Mike Brown in rugby spent a lot of time with a specialist sprint coach and improved immensely).... but slabhead seems to be irremedial. With Casemiro taking on similar characteristics we can't afford to have him in the side at all anymore.
