Summer Transfer Window 23/24

When I saw the reports that Utd were now not willing to let Maguire go, I assumed it was just a negotiating tactic and they were just making it clear to Maguire that they won't be paying him £10m+ to leave however this is probably why.

I think somebody on here touched on it when he announced his retirement from international football but it seems like his body is shot and he can't handle playing regularly anymore.

I think its a bit of everything. When we didn't want to sell him Varane wasn't injured, Shaw wasn't injured and Maguire was 5th in the pecking order. Now we have Varane and Shaw injured he is 3rd in line. Martinez seems to be having a bit of a shocking start to the season as well.

If someone came in and offered what we wanted and Maguire was willing to go quietly I have little doubt he would have gone. I think we would have brought in another CB to replace him though.

I think he could still go if the price is right for all parties. Then we'd be likely to get in the rumoured Todibo. But yes, knowing us, likely not going to happen.

You have to look back in time also, it's been over a decade of poor decisions, they are the reason why we have the likes of Antony in the first place. We haven't suddenly started spending poorly since ETH arrived...
No you havent but id argue the reason why you have Antony is because of ETH. Your signings since ETH has come in havent been great either imo.

NEW: Crystal Palace increasingly likely to keep hold of Cheick Doucouré, with Liverpool put off by Palace’s £70 million valuation of the player

How much did we think he was going to cost after trying to sign Lavia for 60mil? Losing Fabinho and Henderson for Endo would be daft imo

It's seems to me very clear united have a very restricted buy budget and ETH is working within constraints.
Restricted budget? It must be tough only spending nearly 400m since he got there. The problem is how genuinely awful they are at re-cooping money. Also standards of players, being upset at losing an inconsistent lump of **** like Luke Shaw. He's the clearest indicator to me how low standards have slumped since the Fergie teams. Christ he wouldn't have got ahead of Baines at Everton.

When you state it like such then sure 'restricted' seems a dramatic word, but when you take it in context of clubs around them, then yes (considering the rebuild required and which has clearly begun under ETH...) £200m a year is relatively restricted based on their income and the spend of others at the moment. £400m is a lot to say club outside the top 6 however it's like comparing a Greggs with a Michelin star restaurant looking to reclaim it's merit. Both are food but have very different objectives despite aiming to fill you up. Context matters :D

However yes our recoup is absolutely horrific compared to those around us and anyone would be mad to argue the standards haven't dropped since the title winning squads however you won't shift a squad in 3 windows unless you're Chelsea and happy to rip up the carpets, and take a digger to the foundations whilst you're at it. But we can see how that's been going 4 managers in...

Makes a lot of sense if it happens. Rather than spend a fortune on a number 6 that's ultimately not good enough and will need replacing, bringing in somebody like him that can do a bit of everything to help cover there but is also a long term signing for the wider midfield.

Saves us some money to put toward replacing Salah too :D
