Supplements the debate/discussion thread

tbh advice changes with each succesive study and paper on the subject al we can go on is current "best advice"and personal experience.

what we have to rememebr is what may work with one genetic case study group in japan may well not work to the same degree in norway.

point being it is so variable and each to their own.

a good quality diet in balance and suitable to your needs is by far the best advice and by its nature supplimentaion should be treated as only a couple % of the total wehter it be by what is perceived to be legal ethical and unethical sources.

damn i just had my work head on for that post lolz

current govt and nhs advice is that we lack in vit d since it was stopped being added to our diet 10 or so years agao ( i cant rememebr exactly when to late at night after a hard day at work) but since it was not used to fortify or suppliment in this country we have seen an alarming increase in the cases of ricketts in the uk.

Yeah, there's no question about supplementing vitamin d to prevent rickets. If levels are that low, there is a serious deficiency. The RDAs set for vit d levels are set with rickets prevention in mind, not really anything else.

The science has been coming through that the current RDA for vit d is too low, and it's being steadily increased over the past couple of years, and will likely continue to rise so long as the evidence supports it.

It's only some of the claims vit d supporters are making that have been called into question, such as vit D in CV health - the only trials that have been done to test this have come up negative (dunno if there's been anything more recent over the past year, but I probably would've heard about it, though maybe not).

This isn't really true at all. Public advice is usually several years behind the latest trials, and for good reason. It takes years of work, with systematic reviews and meta-analyses before recommendations start to form, and even longer for current recommendations to be changed and updated.

And for supplements and things like this, personal experience is not really reliable for a whole catalogue of reasons. It's 'personal experiences' that enable homeopathy users to rationalise their insane behaviour.

I pretty much agree with all of this. :D

first part working in corporate healthcare cant say where we have to be guided by "latest public advice by hm govt" agree its not really he latest in studies but the layest we can go by.

with the suppliment thing i agree there is a problem with the rise in one man band homeopathic doctors if i read you correctly but in sayin personal experiences i mean people learn to know what works and doesnt work for them. as in sutability, relative effectiveness and so on ..

if im not clear its cause im so damn tired..... think i explained it the way i meant it to sound

Just about to sign up and make my first order on myprotein, anyone got a referral code I could use?

Also, is it worth going for the flavoured options? The unflavoured seems to be a lot better value for money, but I dont know if I could stand the taste!

MP32093 there you go mate.

Flavoured is nice but I'm using unflavoured at the moment due to cash flow and it's fine mix it up and chug it down. It's not amazing but by no means unpleasant.

Bulkpowders chocolate cookies is mega sweet, but I like it :o Tastes like a mix between my protein cookies + cream and chocolate smooth. The fishy oils I went for don't stink and the tubs are quite neat, all in all a happy customer.

Use www.ironscience.co.uk in the pricematcher for even cheaper prices ;)

5kg unflavoured whey will be £37.99 which is the cheapest I've seen, plus you'll get a further £1.90 off with the code.

I don't think the flavoured are worth the extra cost tbh. Also if you decide you really want some flavouring you can always add some Nequick to it later.

Thanks for the codes guys, think I will go with the unflavoured, if I can't stand the taste will just add something to it then, probably works out cheaper adding your own flavouring!

no it certainly doesn't!

Do not go unflavored I used to have the same "man up an chug it down mentality" - doesn't do you any favors because it makes drinking it a chore rather than something you enjoy.
By adding stuff like nesquick you are severely bumping the calories of each shake adding sugars, colorants and lots of other ****. Not worth it at all.

And it doesn't work out cheaper either if you factor the nesquick cost.

Good choice!

The flavoured ones aren't that nice, they just have that nasty artificial sweetener taste. The unflavoured is slightly creamy, tastes like watery milk really.

I started off getting the flavoured MP whey, I think I just got vanilla and chocolate. Could not stand the artificial sweetener taste so switched to unflavoured and have been having that for years. I don't sit there sipping it like a fine cup of coffee, I just put a little water and chug it down in about 15 seconds. It doesn't taste nice, but I don't drink protein shakes for enjoyment.

2 scoops in 200ml of water is quick and easy to get down.

I like my chocolate milkshakes through the day, stuff unflavoured :p

Though I decided to put 1 scoop of protien, 2 dextrose, 1 flax oil and 1 creatine into my PWO. Nope never again, need to get creatine that doesn't taste so bad.
