Supplements the debate/discussion thread

Especially if you'e anxious around exams - should work interestingly. :D

Before every exam I take 60mg of Ritalin, 500mg of caffeine and smooth everything out with 100mg of PropanoLOL. I get 100% in every exam I do, even a rectal exam.

EDIT: [/joking]

Oh dear god...

I've never taken the stuff or looked in to it. So I don't know.

Same way you don't know half the stuff that I do day in day out with my work. It's a question man! :p

Creatine ruins your heart and kidneys. I've had to have surgery 3 times to repair the damage done because of it.

Awesome, a serious reply, thank you.

SMed's joking, Delvis :p

Thank you for clarifying. It's a forum after all, so you can't read peoples tones. ;)

Got a 5kg bag from Myprotein impact whey vanilla.

Pretty decent at around 20g of protein per 25g of powder.

I take two lots, one it in the morning in the skimmed milk with my crunchy bran

(great amount of fibre compared to the rest, 8g per 40g) - much better than even shredded wheat (5.2 per 45g)

Then another later on, do you guys have the whey before or after the workout?, the only reason I ask is because I have a protein rich meal just after working out anyway (loads of chicken or beef).

careful with the advice you follow on this, there is some subjective variance and different things will work for different people. The two things to focus on are absorption speed and effect of digestion on training.

Personally i find and believe any shake/food/supp, apart from a black coffee perhaps, hampers my training response so i wouldnt have anything for an hour before (water/black coffee aside).

The primary benefit of a whey protein shake is its fast absorption rate, give or take its the fastest way to get protein into your blood, this is of most importance directly after training, you should down your shake immediately after the last rep (or as close as possible) you should still have a high protein meal around 1hour later.

This is somewhat simplistic but you wont go far wrong doing things this way. The post workout regime is pretty much an accepted method, pre workout and even intra-workout nutrition is a contentious subject at best.

I thought you want high G.I carbs after a workout (with protien) ?

yes to spike insulin and stimulate IGF, should probably have mentioned that im half asleep i normally throw dextrose in my shake or eat some fruit, sometimes ill even do something truly outrageous like drink a can of cider, but dont tell anyone ;)

But yes you are correct high GI carb plus protein right after training, but for me i eat no further carbs that day, but im a chub, different if your slim

I'm usually 30 mins after a workout. Don't have a shaker pot to take to work

That is the ONLY carbs you have each day???

My carb intake must be like 10x your daily amount!

Do you guys find a real difference in protein shakes from brand to brand? A few guys in my gym have tried many brands and they are still no wiser to which one works better.

Is it a case of finding a brand that offers the highest protein content per serving? i.e. Bulk Powders Ultra Whey Protein Isolate gives 29.1g of protein per 30g serving which is pretty good. So if you are going to buy some protein, do you guys work out the cost of a gram of protein for that container/bag and use that as a key factor when deciding what to buy?

I try to aim for around 220-250g of protein a day and you need shakes high in protein as food will never give you enough. There are guys in my gym that take a shake in the morning and one before bed and each shake is 100g of protein and one thing for sure is they are like beasts.

bulk unflavoured whey is the best everything else is just bro-science bull%&%^

Unless you can't stand the taste. If it makes you retch, it's not the best. Personally, it doesn't bother me. I've been drinking unflavoured whey in water for years. But it makes my friends gag.

Or.. not. Some brands are great, some are terrible. Shock horror.

Amongst all the regular reasonably known brands, there's not any difference between one brand's whey and another's whey in terms of performance. Taste is a personal preference.

If you want to be picky about it, some brands have less protein in them than others per scoop for instance. So yes, it CAN make a difference, some will also be full of other ****.

Again, as you say, personal preference if you want cleaner over dirtier ;)

I can drink unflavoured in water, but as you say, it gags a bit. With some dextrose however it goes down as it just tastes like sugary water :o

They're largely similar. The only two I'd ward people off is holland and barret (cheap and nasty) and maximusle (overpriced)

Myprotein is my vendor of choice - quidco, points, pricematch and offers makes them tough to beat. Their whey is better than any I've tried and has better best before dates in my experience.
