Supplements the debate/discussion thread

If you want to be picky about it, some brands have less protein in them than others per scoop for instance. So yes, it CAN make a difference, some will also be full of other ****.
The amount of whey per scoop (% wise) makes no difference to performance. You can just use more.

Do you guys find a real difference in protein shakes from brand to brand? A few guys in my gym have tried many brands and they are still no wiser to which one works better.

Is it a case of finding a brand that offers the highest protein content per serving? i.e. Bulk Powders Ultra Whey Protein Isolate gives 29.1g of protein per 30g serving which is pretty good. So if you are going to buy some protein, do you guys work out the cost of a gram of protein for that container/bag and use that as a key factor when deciding what to buy?

I try to aim for around 220-250g of protein a day and you need shakes high in protein as food will never give you enough. There are guys in my gym that take a shake in the morning and one before bed and each shake is 100g of protein and one thing for sure is they are like beasts.

How much do you weigh and what's your BF%? And what sort of diet are you following? I doubt you need that much protein unless you're taking naughty supplements or if your diet is poor.

Some brands amino acid profiles are different, some add more or less flavouring etc... some are 70% some go up to 92% protein. Some are lactose free some aren't, some are casein and whey based, some are mixed, some are isolate, and there's lots in between. So there is a lot of difference out there on whey proteins. Personally I keep away from the big brands and I'm quite loyal to a particular brand as I trust them - that's not to say others are poor, but it's down to personal experience.

Ultimately, you won't "feel" the effects of whey, it may help you recover or alleviate or minimise DOMS, depending on how quickly you heal from a workout, and it'll certainly boost your macros. However, it won't be a magic - take for 2 months and boom, an extra 3lbs of LBM will be added to your frame...

Whey is good for supplementing a diet, I cope on purely the occasional shake, and I'm not a beansprout or insipid.

It makes a difference when you need to consider the rest of the scoop (could) contains carbs, BCAAs, aminos, etc. etc. Remember - protein shakes aren't just protein :p

Different brand, different recipe. It also matters where they source their protein from. Cross filtered whey is the standard, and probably best, but there are a lot of other sources that aren't going to be so great.

Well yeah, but isn't that the obvious part? :p

From most branded or well known bulk suppliers, there is going to be no difference with the actual protein you're consuming.

And yet you keep saying there will be no difference between brands? Sorry, doesn't compute. :p There is a difference between shake A and shake B - usually not the protein itself as you say, but there will be a difference between the recipes and content of the actual shake. I use shakes which are as close to 100% protein as I can get, but I cannot stand the unflavoured and I don't have the desire to start mixing my own flavours in. Other people may want shakes that have a balance of aminos and maybe creatine included, all in one shake. Others want pure protein and don't care how foul it tastes. etc. There is a market for these things for a reason. :)

Whey already has balanced aminos, any added extra is just marketing. In terms of differences in effectiveness between different brands, those things contribute to a negligible difference. The only thing that might change things is if one had a lower protein % and you ended up consuming less protein.

Your "gains" are going to be essentially unaffected.

If you want creatine, carbs or whatever added, then that's a different matter.

Unless you can't stand the taste. If it makes you retch, it's not the best. Personally, it doesn't bother me. I've been drinking unflavoured whey in water for years. But it makes my friends gag.

Either I'm missing some sarcasm or you seem to have a bit of an unhealthily large problem with people making the personal choice to compromise the performance of their supplements slightly in order to enjoy using them as opposed to being revolted by them. For someone who doesn't like moaning and whining you have done a lot of it in that post :p

no sarcasm. while the irony isnt lost on me, someone wanting to be huge ripped and impressive while not doing anything to offend their tiny princess like tastebuds makes me shudder. No pain no gain is a cliche but no one big would refute it

By that reckoning you might as well be shrinking your ball sack with steroids as well  What utter gutter trash nonsense. I bet if your mates ****ed in a cup and dared you to drink it you would to be 'manly' and 'hard'

why? you present 1 and 1 and your answer isnt 2. Im saying that gains dont come easy, that you must make sacrifices that you must endure hardship if you want even 10% of what you wish to achieve. You apparently think that steroids make watery protein shake taste like michelin star hours d'ouvres.

Bench press contest me and you any time you like or maybe squat? dead? running away? i can win all those
