Supplements the debate/discussion thread

I was about to comment on spending 4 figures on supps. Then I think about the years I've been using them, even though I seldom use them now, I used to try lots of different ones and experimented with them over the last 7-8years and my expenses will be in the 4 figure mark. It's quite scary! Now I spend less than £100 a year on them - but still, it does add up!

I respond well to creatine if I load it in decent quantities. Yes, it's water, but whilst the strength/power/recovery isn't really tangible, it's definitely one that has an impact. I agree with OAKG too it had another tangible effect.

Of course things like beta alanine and caffeine have an effect too - but they are meant to be stimulatory.

I'm so ahead of my time :p

Whilst I don't actively push supps, the recent interest in researching rather than just buying the marketing ******** is making this thread more pertinent again. It's nice to see people learning a little bit more about the body's mechanisms and how it reacts/copes with different supplements. :)

Yup that's the one I use. Love it. It lasts me a good month if not sometimes 2 - but I use it for cooking a lot - I occasionally take a spoonful of it too. I don't use it as a proper supp - but if I'm feeling hungry, or before a gym workout, I'll have a spoonful of it. I just see it as a food really. Cheap doesn't have to mean poor quality... but... who really knows.

So they use the more expensive, lower yielding non-chemical process and can still charge £3.40/kg?

They may well be robbing people blind, but at the same time, you've got to question a business that brings a product to market at a significantly lower price. I'm sure they don't do it out of the goodness of their heart. Many businesses aren't very honest and could easily skew things.

I understand where you're coming from, but personally I'd rather spend more and feel more comfortable.

What I might do is drop them an email and find out why they're more expensive. They're probably a smaller company and have similar overheads.

For me though, it will always be quality > price. Maybe I'm a mug? Well actually, I know I'm not, but it's whatever is important to you.

Maybe not in the effects, but in terms of taste and quality there is undoubtedly a difference. I want something as least refined/processed as possible, to live by my lifestyle and for me that's worth paying for. :)

It's like protein powders - not all are equal, some contain better AA profiles. Or other supps where the concentration/purity affects the effectiveness so you may have to take more / less to get the same effect.

Ultimately, for me CO is a food, not a supplement. I use it to cook with and to eat - so for me the price of quality comes into it's own. If you're using it like a supp, then of course it's less of an issue if you're just after MCTs. As long as it's not bleached or mixed with crap ingredients then that's all you need to worry about. :)

My favourite supplier - BSD - are currently not supplying whey protein as they're trying to secure new suppliers. :( My loyalty to them was owing to an acquaintance owning/running the business, and as such trust the product more and I know the quality is good. I've never been a fan of MP - I just don't find their products that interesting. However, I;'m hardly a proponent of the supplement industry so I'm a bad example. The only thing I REALLY like about TPW is the fact you can create your own mix - but even then they don't have all the products I'd want. I just hope TPW stick to supplements only and don't start selling gym equipment too. Focus on one thing and excel at it.

I prefer unflavoured anyway, and just add cinnamon/chocolate powder into it. Sure, it's not "perfect" but it's cheaper and easier - and since my shakes are taken on training days and / or on days where poor food has been eaten (which is rare these days) I don't get through a lot.

busy gym.. waiting for equipment to free up is annoying as hell but going after 10pm is even worse when i need to up at 7.30 :) but yeah it is a bit long, on saturdays for e.g. i can be in and out in 1-1.15 but weekdays are the worst.

i dont do cardio, i get enough from cycling :)

Still seems like a long time! What's your routine? What sort of training do you do?

I get up at 6am so no sympathy from me :p
