Supplements the debate/discussion thread

Normally I'd agree with you FF. I've been taking a cup of coffee pre-workout for the past 3 years, actually following your own advice and prompted by discussions on here. It definitely helps. However, I'm working long hours trying to hit deadlines and I find I need that extra boost when it comes to training time on week nights. After trying Neurocore last night, it definitely gave me far more of a boost than my normal pre-workout coffee. Infact, the difference is fairly huge!

That's coming from someone who doesn't use supps at all, not even post-workout proteins, purely diet!

I can live with £23 for a tub!

Ok that’s fair enough, and I see where you’re coming from. I work long hours/days too, and sometimes it’s almost impossible to get the motivation to get to the gym, however, having eaten well throughout the day, I’m often ok once I’m there, although yawning a lot. That’s why I like taking things like a banana to give a sustained bit of energy release.

I'm completely off caffeine now, feel so much better for it.

I agree – came off caffeine for a while, and just drunk more water and felt amazing for it.

However, it does give a good boost – alternatively you can just eat some sweets and high GI if you want a sugar rush, however, you’re likely to crash too if you’re not careful.

I enjoy my coffee and tea too much :o

Has it arrived yet? As there's a good chance you'll be hit with duty and anything containing whey won't be allowed in.

I think I will be stocking up on whey this month before the price increase kicks in.. That.. or dare I say it.. eat actual food!

Only kidding, I do that too :p

Anyone tried Driven Sports Craze?

I fancy trying that next. Ive tried Jack3d and Scimx Xplode. Both pretty good.

It looks like the only thing Craze contains that actually has a proven effect in a sports/training scenario for humans is caffeine.

Jack3d is different because of the pseudo-amphetamine it contains. Which is also now banned in the UK and has been banned by WADA for a few years.

Save your £££s and buy some ProPlus.

Yea i need to order some whey only got 0.5kg left, anyone know where the cheapest at the moment for flavored stuff?

I'm guessing MyProtein will be fairly cheap compared to most other sellers. Currently £55 for 5kg of any flavored protein which is pretty good.

I love that feeling when a big MyProtein box gets delivered lol.

I bought:

5kg Unflavored Impact Whey Protein
1.2kg Creapure
270 caps Cod Liver Oil
270 caps Mega Green Tea Extract

Should be enough supplies for about 6 months.

I was going to get a pre workout but I haven't used one for about 2 months (I have half a tub of Jack3d left) but never feel the need, I always have enough energy and motivation to lift heavy things and put them down :p

And then save a few more £s and just get a bag of caffeine from MP. BUT BE ****ING CAREFUL :p

I've still got 2 bottles of caffeine tablets from MyProtein, 200mg per tablet.

ProPlus has 100mg per tablet? So wouldn't it be cheaper to buy that!

I tried the tablets before and I'm pretty sure I never noticed any effect lol

How many do you take, and how long have you been taking them?

ProPlus only has 50mg/tablet, and WADA only get twitchy if you've got more than 300mg going round. So six tablets will take you where you can be if you're a competing athlete.

I drink too much coffee, so even that much doesn't have a particularly pronounced effect.

I said bag for a reason. 100g of powder costs £3.50

Get some 0.01g scales for under a fiver and a MP mini scoop for a few pence. Set for years for the same price as a few tablets.

I used to take one tablet of 200mg about 20 minutes before a workout (three workouts a week). I never drank coffee before that, just water.

And honestly I don't remember ever having increased energy or anything remotely like that. Jack3d also never worked for me even when I went up to 3 scoops. And before that I never had drinks with caffeine.

It sucks!

I wish I was sensitive to stimulants, always wanted to see how it would feel to be like my friends when they take stimulants, you can clearly see a difference in their energy lol

Ah right sorry didn't read that! :p

If the main ingredient in all these pre workouts is caffeine then people should start buying bags of caffeine instead!

Just don't do what my mate done and get a bag then take a fairly hefty scoop because he's an idiot, apparently he spent the day in bed feeling rather unpleasant :D

Yeah, a few of the comments on the caffeine powder state needing to go to the emergency room because they've overdosed, i like having a cup of coffee (black) and amino acids before i train and willpower does the rest.

Very true. However, if people did a bit of research, there wouldn't be a supplement industry in the same way there is now. :)

Most of the stuff in pre-workout drinks is proven to have an effect in a very specific circumstance which - 99% of the time - is completely unrelated to an actual training/workout/whatever environment. As such, things like HMB, L-gluatmine, boluxamine and zomginine do something in a laboratory environment, or are added because a given physiological process needs them, but in the real world they do not add anything when tested in a training/workout environment.

Simple, really.

Jack3d is different because the DMAA in it is a pseudo-amphetamine, which does actually work and there is a lot of very good evidence to demosntrate its efficacy. Which is why it is banned in amateur/professional sport.

Nitric oxide also has the proven vasodilation effect, but that in and of itself does nothing more other than give somebody big veins and the 'pump', as such. Neither of which helps growth/whatever.

So yes. If you're going for a pre-workout drink, make sure it's got BCAAs, carbs (if that's your thing), caffeine, and the correct amount of beta alanine and creatine in it. It will taste rank, but stands a much better chance of doing something than whatever else people may use as those ingredients have good biomedical/physiological science behind them.

I think it was FF who mixed his own up a while ago? I was going to do the same and bought the Beta-alanine, caffeine etc then realised the initial cost was more than i expected even if it did work out cheaper in the long run so gave up :p Still got most of that left..
