Supplements the debate/discussion thread

Seeking to improve my flexibility and protect my back as I ease myself back into lifting weights, I was recommended Ming Chew's book which is largely about myofascial work.

In the book he recommends a few supps like fish oils etc which make sense. He is also keen on systemic enzyme products like Wobenzyme and Vitalzym.

Anyone familiar with these type of supps and their benefits?

Fish oils are for me a basic supplement that a lot of people should be taking owing to our diets missing a lot of EFAs (omega oils) and the health benefits have been empirically proven. Clearly a balanced diet is just as important but things like fish oils aren't going to be a waste as long as you take it with food :)

Go through the fridge.
Whatever fruit/vegetables you have to hand, put them in and then drink.

I'm not sure if you want to add meat to this - but blended meat tastes nasty.
Nutribullet is very much a vegan/vegetarian contraption.

Any recommendations for supplements to help with weight loss/maintaining weight loss?

Have been drinking usn/phd diet whey recently and has helped me to kick certain habits to one side and loose weight but loosing slight interest in the shakes.

A good sensible diet and workout routine.
Until you start getting into the banned and slightly more dangerous fat loss drugs they're all of little use, including that "diet" whey you're splashing cash on.

Just look for one with fewer calories per shake or adjust your diet so you're not eating as much on top of the shakes. As above diet whey is usually more expensive and there's nothing diet about it.

Not a supplement but http://www.myfitnesspal.com/ is your friend here, it will help you plan your diet and keep to it.
When I was aggresively losing weight I pretty much lived on quorn salad wraps and shakes made of oats, flax, protein, pb

No such thing exists unless you are willing to use items that aren't strictly legit.

Diet and exercise intensity, with sensible diet hormonal manipulation can have a good effect - but it is not a quick win.

Aaaah weight loss "magic" pills.

Hehehe.

If there was a 100% effective weight loss pill which allowed a human to eat whatever they wanted, be as lazy as they wanted and not put on any weight - the inventor of that pill would be a billionaire, very quickly. A license to print money.

The weight loss industry is absolutely HUGE and many people are waiting for the "magic" pill to appear.

I think the closest thing to a "magic" pill which is legal, is caffeine. It gives you energy and allows you to exercise without feeling weak, lazy and lethargic. And the best part - its cheap and is available in all supermarkets.

I also just googled the following:

I just got hold of some 4-1-1 BCAAs from MyProtein. I'm not convinced that they really do anything but I thought I'd give them a try anyhow.

My god do they smell and taste rank :/

I found the taste of unflavoured BCAA's becomes negligible once you've been using them long enough.

A bit of squash doesn't go a miss if you are struggling, others might recommend flav drops. I grabbed some instantised flavoured recently as I use them so infrequently the small premium was justifiable.

I'm sure I'll get used to it eventually. I prefer to use unflavoured stuff where possible. At the moment it's more the smell than the taste really, and the way it repeats on me... Bleurgh :p Glad to hear that it's likely I'll get used to it anyhow.

Do you find BCAAs make much difference? I'm hoping they will help with recovery a little for me (but expecting that they won't).
