Tabletop Warhammer?

Anyone used Midco Toys? They sell on eBay but also have a store in Burton-upon-Trent.

Bought a starter set on the 25th, £20 including Royal Mail tracked. Got a dispatch email on the 30th and still haven't received anything.

They also appear to have removed all the Warhammer stuff from their eBay store since I placed my order.

Getting impatient :(. I can't see anything longer than 3 working days is acceptable for delivery.

Well me and LordHughes have our army lists pretty much ready for Sunday. Can you all try and come up with names for your characters, squads and vehicles if possible? Just makes the battle report a bit better :)

Bah, my order still hasn't shipped yet. Was hoping to spend the weekend painting up some stuff! But I'm happy that I'm being kept informed about the status, at least.

Looking forward to reading the battle report following the game that's going on on Sunday. :)

Went to THW this afternoon and it turns out they have shut their wargaming centre and walk-in shop. From now on, everything will be online orders only.

:(

After three great years of growth we have decided that we are going to streamline the business in order to make Triple Helix Wargames a more effective and efficient retailer. Therefore we have decided that we will no longer run the gaming centre on a club night or weekends. We will honour current bookings for events but will not be looking to take future event bookings. This decision was not reached quickly or easily, and the change will come into immediate effect as we have to react to the changing trends in retail, and the changing behaviours of our customers.

We will continue to operate as a retailer and our other activities on the Web, eBay and at local shows will be unaffected, and instead of running the gaming centre we will focus on developing our terrain range and other product lines. We have plans for a new website and expansion onto Amazon, which will mean new products and different lines will be made available to our customers to purchase sooner, all at our excellent discounted pricing. ‘Collect in store’ will still be available through our website and our commission based eBay selling will continue unaffected.

Triple Helix Wargames is not moving from Unit 3, and we will continue to develop interest in our hobby in the local area through clubs in schools and by giving support to local gaming groups.

Steven and Charlotte would like to thank our regular attendees for their support, and we look forward to meeting your wargaming needs in the future, albeit in a different way.

Regards

Steven, Charlotte and the Triple Helix Team

Hmm, should we be concerned?

Why close the wargaming centre? Surely that costs them very little if established?

I imagine that the unit cost is quite high as it was pretty big, so they will sell off the unit side of it and just keep the office above. There were never that many people using it for games etc so I imagine the money they were making from physical players wasn't enough to keep the centre going. They also had a fair number of staff so I imagine some of the nice guys working there don't now :(

As far as ordering goes, I don't think there are any issues so should be ok. They were making good money from orders and they are looking at expanding further. I'm going to put in a relatively big order tomorrow, will let you know how I get on with it :)

Are warhammer paints still worth the purchase? is there a (cheaper) alternative?

My paints have long gone the way of the hobo/dodo

Take a look at Coat d'Arms (they made GW paints in the 90s), Formula P3 (amazing but limited range) and Vallejo (massive selection across the Game Colour and Model Colour ranges). There are also Reaper and Foundry, but I've never tried either. I think all of these come in 17 or 18ml pots/bottles.

How do you guys base your models? In the past I just used to paint the base goblin green and then flock it. I quite fancy trying some static grass etc.

If one uses sand do they just use typical builders sharp sand or a special modelling variety?

Usually use modelling sand (I got a huge tub a few years ago), then paint that and when the model is finally finished, add a couple of patches of static grass. Looks pretty good for minimal effort. This time round I want to try doing some kind of frozen waste effect but I'm not sure if I can be bothered with the extra effort... :p

Do you add the sand before you undercoat the whole model? or after the model is painted?

My method is:

1) Build model
2) Apply PVA/wood glue to base and shove some sand on top
3) Wait for it to dry
4) Apply some watered down PVA/wood glue over the top to make the sand stay in place better
5) Undercoat

There's no right way to do it though.
