Woogie's Chaos Space Marines vs Brabbinho's Imperial Guard – 1500pts
The mission was Take and Hold with a Spearhead deployment. Woogie won the role and let Brabbinho go first. The Imperial Guard would be defending a Fuel depot in the lower right quarter while the Traitor Marines would be defending a Chaos temple in the top left. Brabbinho deployed most of his army (leaving a Vendetta with a unit of veterans on board, 2 squads of troopers and their command squad in reserves) Woogie deployed his entire army , his Havocs taking up positions with a good view of the battlefield while the Plague Marines and Daemons made ready to advance on the Guard.
Deployment:
Turn 1:
The Valkyrie gunned it's engines and advanced behind the woods, ready to flank the heretics. Everything else stayed put and opened fire. The heavy weapons teams (3 mortars and 3 heavy bolters), both Leman Russ tanks and the Guardsmen in range opened fire, leaving every daemon dead and a single Havoc from the missile launcher squad.
Typhus wisely decided to join one of the plague marine squads (after all he can be instant killed by a battle cannon!) and they advanced with the plague marine squad from the ruins. A third plague marine squad moved into the trees seeking cover. The Havocs opened fire with two autocannons and four heavy bolters, guardsmen began to die. The Havocs with missile launchers opened fire on the Leman Russ by the ruins but even krak missiles failed to penetrate the thick front armour.
Turn 2:
Brabbinho began rolling for his reserves, helped by his Astropath all but the Vendetta came on. The Guardsmen moving on near the statues of the Emperor's personal horses. Guardsmen Marbo appeared in the trees between the havocs and the plague marines. Marbo threw his demo charge at the Havocs, being designed for vehciles it made a mockery of the ancient armour, killing three of the squad. The Valkyrie moved over the trees, but the pilot was obviously green, catching a low branch causing the flyer to crash land in the trees! (Brabbinho managed to roll a 1 for his dangerous terrain test...this is why I keep my skimmers away from trees!) The Veteran squad inside, shaken but unharmed moved away from the wreckage. The Leman Russ' opened fire on the advancing plague marines, killing six of their number (Brabbinho was particularly fortunate with his scatter rolls for 99% of the battle!) The lasguns of the main squad failed to add to this though (strength 3 lasguns against toughness 5 feel no pain Plague Marines....it's going to take a lot to bring even one down)
The plague marines continued to advance (one of them down to one member now). The havocs near Marbo retaliated and killed the elite commando. The marines and remaining Havocs opened fire on the rapidly dwindling Guardsmen squad, killing a few more.
Turn 3:
The Vendetta joined the battle, coming on from the right flank. The guardsmen advanced on Typhus' squad to get into rapid fire range. Despite the hail of laser fire, only a single soldier fell. The combined fire of the Leman Russ by the ruins, the newly arrived Vendetta and the disabled Valkyrie destroyed the Missile Launcher equipped Havoc squad entirely.
Typhus called on the powers of Nurgle and a host of flies, slime and toxic gasses covered the Guardsmen, killing 13 of them! The commissar ensured the remaining troopers stood their ground. The plague marines on the left flank advanced in a different direction...back towards the trees. The lone surviving marine from the squad in the centre charged the Leman Russ tank and hurled his Krak grenade....but the tank emerged unscathed. Typhus charged the remaining guardsmen with his squad...we held our breath waiting to see what this Behemoth would do in combat. Well he killed one marine but his Daemon Weapon acted up and caused him a wound! The other marines didn't fare much better, failing to kill a single guardsmen! (In some ways this worked in Woogie's favour, the rest of the Imperial army would be unable to shoot at Typhus and his squad as they remained locked in combat)
Turn 4:
The Vendetta advanced alongside the ruins and the tanks both opened fire on the Havocs, killing another four. The remaining heretic held his ground though. In the assault phase Typhus killed the last two guardsmen and advanced on the objective.
The two autocannon equipped havocs opened fire on the advancing Vendetta, but such was the speed of the flyer, both shots missed. Typhus again called on the power of the warp, obliterating the heavy bolter squad on the hill! Typhus advanced onto the hill, the fuel depot in his sights.
Turn 5:
(At this point the game was 1-1, but both armies had a troop choice (Woogie had the plague marines with Typhus and Brabbinho had the Vendetta packed with a veteran squad. It could go either way!)
All the guardsmen advanced, the vendetta continuing to fly at full speed towards the temple. The tanks opened up point blank at Typhus and his squad, killing the two remaining marines. (with the plague marines dead, Typhus could only contest the objective, not claim it) In the assault phase the command squads in a moment of sheer courage charged the Herald of Nurgle. Before they could strike Typhus swung his manreaper and felled four of the officers. Despite 9 of the experienced men attacking in return, they could not find a chink in his ancient terminator armour. Their courage wavered and they fled before this embodiment of decay.
Typhus marched slowly but relentlessly towards the depot, the plague marine squad in the trees advanced back towards the temple in the face of the incoming Vendetta. Once again the autocannons opened fire on the Vendetta but miraculously the ship was only shaken!
Turn 6:
The vendetta arrived at the temple and the veterans disembarked and opened fire on the squad guarding it. Despite having 3 meltaguns, only one marine fell! The Leman Russ tanks opened fire on Typhus, but the shell scattered and obliterated the mortar squad! (Brabbinho's...fortunate scatter rolls finally failed him)
The plague marines charged the veterans and killed 6. The remaining veterans felled one in return but it was not enough and they ran, only to be cut down by bolter fire. Typhus meanwhile, chilled at the fuel depot.
(If the game ended at this point then it would be a 0-0 draw (The vendetta contesting the temple and nothing holding the fuel depot) but a 6 was rolled and one more turn would happen!)
Turn 7:
The tanks opened fire on the marines near the temple, killing a few, the rest of the army was out of range though.
In the chaos turn the two melta guns opened fire on the Vendetta, destroying it completely and securing the Temple for Nurgle!
Final Score:
Chaos - 1
Imperial Guard - 0
