Tabletop Warhammer?

First Riptide built Saturday night. Went to Open Day @ WHW yesterday so didn't get a chance to post it.

Started work on my Sunshark/Razorshark last night too and picking up my 2nd Riptide today hopefully if I can get to the shop before it closes! Cut off the rear stabilisers of the Sunshark to invert them and started playing with Green stuff to fill in the gaps. Will post a WIP pic tonight.

Has anyone dabbled in historical wargaming? I used to play quite a bit of American Civil War and WW2 and am thinking of getting back into it but just wondering if anyone can recommend any fun games?

I'm toying with flames of war but I'm quite tempted to give a different era a bash.

God dammit that is one big model! I really want one :(

Tau list seems quite fun, lot's of options to customise your squads. Still seems to suffer from the standard codex problem of a few stand-out duff units.

And a major error with the Bomber, it starts with no bombs and there is no way to create a bomb unless you've used a bomb...how did that get past the proof readers.

Still hasn't been caught even though there's a FAQ document available already... :o

Decided to make a gamble on that site and order one set of Reaper reds (the Bloodthirsty Reds triad). Hope this goes better than my Mythreal experience. :p

Thankfully they spotted the Missile Drone problem quickly (that could have been worse than Longfang Missile spam!)

I think the codex suffers from the same problem as the last codex though....the troop choices suck. Fire Warriors are slightly better but Kroot seem not great. In a game where troops should be your bedrock (objectives and the like) every Tau list has the minimum amount of troops and then all the interesting choices elsewhere.

I think they should have allowed Pathfinders to be troop choices as well really.

Does seem like a major issue, they want small battles fought over a 1-2 thousand points, and on small tables, leading to situations where people buy their special models, and few troops (probably as GW have priced things so badly)
It isn't like battles of old, or any of the tales they used to recount in White Dwarf and literature. The rogue trader edition 1 days are well and truly gone.

It matters not, skirmish encounters between the elites of each potential force are all that meet now, Imperial guard are an odd codex to attempt to use now, as everything uses super-duper this and that, and each army has access to guys who ignore all the standard rules, and have specials describing this and that. The main rulebook is mostly overwritten in parts for every single codex, and no doubt will be as they continue to renew and refresh.

Its a bit of a shame that with the recent edition 6, they didn't baseline everything.

Yeah Shami, I can see what you mean. I still think if my opponent dropped six maxed-out Fire Warrior squads on the table I'd be a little afraid, though. :p

It's nice to see that the Vespids have an extra 6" on their weapon's range to make them a little more useful. I always liked the look of the models but never saw anybody play them because they were too fragile to get within 12" of most things that their weapons would be scary for.

oh am I playing you Dan?

not sure, either Tau or IG. Not sure which day I will be able to play this week probably Wednesday, Thursday or Friday.

Was reading this months white dwarf and the article from Jervis Johnson (i think thats his name) was actually quite good and I quite like the idea of having a game with a GM at some point. Introduce a few 'house rules' so the GM can play a bit (say they can roll to bring on 1 squad that fits into the scenario in some way) just an idea.
