Tabletop Warhammer?

Don't ever listen to how many paints GW tell you that you "need"

Remember they want to sell paints. I remember their paint ultramarines bundle had like 30 paints in it, absolutely absurd.

My couple of visits I have found them being fine but to be honest I know what I want so they probably haven’t had the chance to get into “sales” mode with me.

Yeha I think they've somewhat changed their marketing tactics over the last two years - a much more pleasant company to deal with. Although I still hate when they try to engage you in a deep conversation about the hobby when you just pop in for a quick browse/purchase - I just paint the models to stop myself off the streets ffs :p

Guys, you experienced lot can help me!

I own a dice store online and am about to move into miniatures for D&D (reaper ones) and am in talks with Rosemary and Co about getting a starter brush back together (really good brushes for cheap!). The folks that would be buying this are the type to have zero experience painting generally so wanted to offer an "all in one" kit you can just get off me that includes everything.

My question is this... for 28mm "hero" models, what brushes should I be adding? I was thinking a small dry brush, a #2, #1 and a #0. That'd cover most bases right? The dry brush is there as you can get really nice effects with it with zero effort.

Think you've got it sussed really. To be fair, a "beginners" package with slightly more premium products like you've suggested is a really good idea. If it's a beginners set, I wouldn't bother with the #0 though.

A reaper mini, some brushes, a knife to tidy up.

Generally I agree but the edge highlighting / oil really did make a difference on the models I have done myself.

Going to do cawl next.... Jesus.

Just realised I haven’t posted any pictures in a while, here’s some of the stuff I’ve completed. I’ve got a couple of Contemptor Dreads finished too but no pictures, will have to take some new ones. Anyways:

I use Rosemary & Co for all my brushes. For starter set I just suggested Series 401 Pointed Sables Size 0 and 2 as his starting brushes. They hold a nice tip and are fairly easy to care for and don't break the bank. A stiffer drybrush is probably a good idea but I admit I just use old brushes or cheap humbrol multi-packs for that.

For a higher end brush and more detail work I use a Series 22 or 33 Size 0-2 for everything. I won't use anything smaller than a 0 as I tend to find with a good point and decent maintenance then you won't need it and the paint dries out too quickly anyway on a small brush.

Reminds me I need to go order a few more for 2018...

I get fed up of stores offering beginner sets for things and offering crap quality products with em, especially when there is quality for the same price!

For the #0, just thinking from a "when I started" point of view in which I thought you need tiny brushes (use my winsor newton #2 for everything) so wouldn't want folks going "but I need a tiny brush!".

Going to see about trying to add a small cutting knife to it to clean the model up of mold lines as well as a small back for basing the model. Will have to see about costs!

Hi chaps.

Had another go at a marine today. All was going great and really happy with the shading (the nuln oil went on a little thick on the flat surfaces but I’m ok with that as looking for a darker model anyway) but then I had my first attempt at layering and it was horrible.

Essentially the layers stood out a mile away, so obvious what I was trying to do and there was such blatant demarcation one layer to the other.

How do you avoid such clear “boundaries” between two layers?

I will post photos of my poor attempt tonight/tomorrow when I can get my laptop going.

Thanks!

I did think that as there are no real clear “layer” areas with the armour mostly being plated.

These are my practice models so i’ll Try edging the next one.

It actually isn’t as bad on a second viewing after taking time to chill but still not hugely happy with it :p

After lots of swearing and failed attempts of painting the impossible (and with lots of touching up to go) here’s my skiitari! Very happy with how they based. Painting the cogs on the breast plates was impossible, as were the eyes. Otherwise... I’ll take it! Eyes screaming with strain right now :o :p

Is that your first ever squad? It’s a damn good effort.

Annoyingly I don’t really get the tile to paint as much as I want with the wife and two young kids. I’ve still got the 3 marines to do who’ve had a red basecoat but that’s it.

Have to just snatch time time when I can which is a little frustrating.

Well, it’s the first squad for about 18 years! Cheers. Look much better now post touching up - they had red all over their feet during that last pic :p

They took absolutely forever. Possibly ~20 hours including build time. Maybe even more. I’m sure I’ll get quicker.

Decided I’m going to mix it up with some Space Wolves. Have strategised an awesome 2000 pt army so hope I get to actually play it at some point! Particularly since I bought all the bits.

Spent about an hour and a half doing the first gold highlights on Cawl... still need to touch up afterwards. That’s about 30 seconds of the ‘learn to paint vid’ only.... only about 20 mins to go :(

Guys, do you all have battlescribe the programme? It’s really neat. Very easy to edit rosters etc.
