Tabletop Warhammer?

After boldly proclaiming I had no need for an airbrush. I now have ordered an airbrush and accessories and of course I didn't just get a basic one to begin with. I am weak.
The week of rain really annoyed me because I wanted to get on and paint but I couldn't get out with my spray cans.

WIP on my Tyrant. I've been at this thing for ages, most of the extra time was in the build changing all the trim on the armour panels but I think they've come out looking pretty good now there's paint on them and definitely helps it feel like a traitor knight.

Still got a bit to do on the body and haven't really touched the four main weapons at all yet. And the head but that won't take too long as it's mostly hidden behind the mask on this one. Armour is practically done, just needs a wash on the gold and then some more ultra matte all over and some highlights on the gold. And some verdigris but that takes five minutes.

my advice would be to just use it for priming to start with. get used to the trigger action and how much flow you get in relation to the pull back.

I usually run mine around 25psi for vallejo black spray primer. I usually throw abbadon black into the airbrush if I am doing Templars and spray my models with that after the primer. It makes colour matching mistakes a doddle.
if you plan to put a regular citadel paint through your brush then a good starting point is 50/50 water and paint with at least three drops of flow improver.
a pack of Amazon Makeup Mixing Palettes and pipettes will help get your measurements right and make mixing and pouring very easy without wasting too much paint.

the best thing you can do is add flow improver to most mixes of paint as it retards drying time so you have less chance of a clog. A tip someone showed me is to have a small bowl of flow improver with a brush close to the airbrush.
if you spray your models in batches, it can be helpful to brush on flow improver around the needle with an old brush.
always start your spray away from the model

pro tip, learn to strip and clean it before using it. you will block it, you will clog it. so knowing how to sort that out is a huge time saver.
if you end up with any questions then let me know.

The bit people don't often seem to talk about with airbrushes, though i've heard mention once or twice, is needing ventilation and respirator masks etc. I recall a video by Dana Howl for example, where she has a 'painting booth' set up with extract ventilation and filters for airbrushing. After seeing that I gave up on the idea as I just don't have the space to have all the sort of gear left set up.

Do people here that use airbrushes have much else to their set up beyond the airbrush and compressor or just sat at a desk painting away with a nearby window open?

@rjk thanks, it will be good to get some advice, I have if course watched plenty of videos regarding thinners, flow liquid, a few techniques (like the mixing method by covering the end).

@Kenai I see it mentioned all the time from videos I've watched tbh, I have a decent mask ordered and also a cheap spray booth with the extraction pipe. They are not that big and I think a few can fold into a suitcase.

I think my GW metallic paints didn't like being left for 4 years, they are still liquid but like blue coloured with hardly any pigment.

Been shaking the **** out of them as well.

I have a spray booth that folds away. It's got a long pipe that you can hang out of the window but to be honest all the paint just gets caught in the filter anyway so I use it without. You can see it pulling the mist from the air, it's not amazing but it does seem to keep it out of the air. I don't change the filter anywhere near as much as I should.

When it's folded away it's like.. 18x8x6 inches I reckon? I use it as a foot rest under the desk :D

If you look up airbrush booth on amazon you get a million results that all look the same because they are - it's that one I've got.

my rule is this.

one model, a quick layer or gradient, no problem. windows open - use my 3m respirator.

priming a squad or anything that will require the compressor to kick in more than twice, then the booth comes out of the loft and the respirator stays on.
I fully understand that it's probably overkill but after many years of abusing my lungs, I'm old enough to at least try and avoid that now.

I did my first minis by the window and just wore a surgical mask and had black snot for a day so that bad practice got canned off pretty quickly.
no idea why the youtubers dont put more emphasis on spraying in a well ventilated environment.
I get its for the video or whatever but if you can afford a box of warhammer then you can afford a 3m mask

Some progress shots.

My local GW kindly gave me 3 of these marines to paint to get my eye back in.

First off, the abombination marine... purely for testing technique, ideas, layering, etc etc. Bit of a mess but thats what it was for

Once I was happy on that, applied the technique to a "wip" model. Both these boys are painted to the same scheme (duh) but using differing methods to get there.

Finding the citadel contrast paints to have oddly different behaviors, which is fine, as long as you can practice with them, but id of been a bit miffed with some of the colors had I not had that ability to test and stuck it on a model to either ruin it or make a right mess.

The Speedpaint metalics however, WOW WOW WOW. They require good amounts of shaking, so fortunately the vortex mixer really helps here but they go on like an absolute dream. Thinking of splashing out on the big speedpaint set to be honest.

Again its been 15 years since picking up a brush, so a lot to re-learn, but really getting back into the feel of things.

Forgot about all the vehicles I have. I think some larger flat panels would be good for practicing some techniques on, easy to clean off too.

Can someone explain what the Citadel paint guides mean, I don't understand hte link between the icons on the left and the actual amount of paints needed.

Example, Black shows three icons, when you click it shows two, I get one is a base and one is a layer.

This is the most confusing, showing 4 icons and yet just one paint needed.

Hi guys, got a question.

Towards the end of 8th edition, some additional rules were brought out for Grey Knights because they were pretty terrible that helped to balance them out.

I'm not 100% sure if it was a book or what, but I know something was released, I vaguely remember something about being able to pick one of three traits which would give your whole army a +1 armour save or whatever.

Does anyone remember what is was?

Are you just thinking of the codex itself? I didn't play then but I understand as with 10th, some factions don't have updated rules etc until later (like fists, white scars now).
I'm oh maybe this? https://www.goonhammer.com/start-competing-grey-knights-tactics/

In Particular "...new abilities from psychic awakening"

No wasn't the codex.

Basically Grey Knights sucked, so eventually GW released... something.... With updated rules or whatever for Grey Knights to help balance them.

I'm not talking about the points adjustments either, was some additional rules that gave them a buff.

Meh, sorry I know I'm being so vague but was like 4 years ago.
