Tabletop Warhammer?

To the ones who actually do play whereabouts do you actually play?

I tend to take over the living room for an afternoon & have some mates round for a few games. although my house mate is moving out soon & I'm tempted to turn the big bed room into a gaming room with my PC etc. Will have enough room to have a perminently set up gaming table in there too:D

playing my first apoccolypse game this weekend coming. 4 of us, 3 titans, a baneblade or 2... and some tau which ive not played against before. im playing my 5 drop pode which ive not done before! playing my wooden fllor in the lounge, game will be 10ft by 10ft. should be a laugh, going to have timed rounds to stop any lingering. especially as one guy is IG and rolls what seams several hundred dice per turn due to vox coms and special rules!

Im feeling quite nerdy about it all.

Titans are absolutely great fun..especially when they go "BOOM"! :D
We tend to have one "all in" game at our gaming weekends, and it's great fun having titans, super heavies and the big flyers :)

The downside, as you say is the time it can take, especially when you might have hundreds of dice rolls (I think one of the orc guys I was playing against was hitting 70+ dice on a mob of about 12-15 orc's alone).

I've got my very own "super heavy" waiting for assembly and painting here, but it's only a Brass Scorpion, there is no way I could justify the cost of a real titan, although the new Eldar titan is great (I saw an early version of it at Games day last year).

One of the best things about playing Wargames when you're a little older is that you have the money to buy the nice stuff, and often the space and time to play it :) (or at least transport).
I suspect a lot of people's partners would also prefer their hubby/BF be playing silly games with funny little men, than out clubbing etc:p

I have some pretty old figures now. Wonder if they're worth owt. Here's one of them (don't know much about it other than it's Leman Russ):

As I mentioned earlier I'm off to get some bits at the weekend. For someone who hasn't really painted/gamed since about 1989/90, where is a good place to start in the 40k universe/which rulebook etc?

I guess I'm looking to get a decent board/scenery set up and have a few games with my son. I'll probablly just go to GW this time around, as thier one pretty near but in future will order off the net if theres some decent places to order from.

best place to start is the assault on black reach boxset, it's pretty much everything you need to get you started including the full rulebook in a portable A5 format as well as 2 armies, some dice and some measuring stick, all you'll need is some clippers to take the models off the sprues. and it's reasonable price, you could get something extra for the orks to even out the points, maybe a box of killakans or something...

maelstrom games offers a good discount with free (and quick) postage, i usually buy from them, wayland games is quite good as well.

I would rather avoid my local GW as they tend to be overly enthusiastic about EVERYTHING.

And it smells bad, dark sphere looks quite good. £10 off the 40k rulebook, bringing it down to stratosphere levels instead of deep space levels. :p

If you're not bothered by the additional fluff that comes with the proper hardback book, grab one of the smaller ones off ebay that comes with the boxed set. I picked mine up for just over a tenner.

I use online shops for buying stuff now,
Dark sphere usually offers about a 20-25% discount off the official GW price, i got the battleforce for 39 quid off them instead of 51 ish.

Never heard of Dark Sphere before, going to check them out. Cheers!

We've got one of the proper Citadel game boards set up in lieu of living room furniture around my friends house, which where we mainly play. Just depends really who's got space and a Mrs who won't go wild at it all.

Definitely come back with some pictures!

I've still got my massed collections.

Started with LOTR (the magazines advertised on TV, Battle Games In Middle Earth).
Then a few years later, I also moved into 40k.

Never gamed, it was just about building and painting them. But since I'm a slow painter, most of mine is unpainted :p

Gave up though for two reasons- decided it was best to put it to one side as I reached my later teens. Also, the prices, which became insane. When I started, you could get 20 Imperial Guard troops for £12 or £15, now its £12 for 10 I believe. Absolute madness.

Where are they manufactured? Is there no way of getting them cheaper from say Hong Kong?

Also, you need to factor in inflation in these prices, a lot of stuff is now more expensive than it was 10-15 years ago.

All made in the UK I believe, apart from stuff like books, paints etc.

Even with inflation, I just personally can't justify the prices, especially with some doubling in the 8 years since I began.

The plastics are made close to nottingham, then delivered to the notts HQ to be packaged. The metal figures...or whats left, are made at the notts HQ and packaged on site.

I went round the factory a few years back.

Have always wanted to start this up again, rebought a dark angel army on the cheap of ebay and started painting again which was all good, but then went off it again, have moved house twice since i last opened the boxes so there is a pretty good chance they are all trashed.

My main problem is finding someone to play with, dont know anyone that plays and there is no "local" shop to go to (while living in london local means somewhere you dont need to get the tube to).

Same with me, think I would actually like to play this again but

1) I don't think my gf is that impressed with the idea;
2) I know no one who plays; and
3) My Lord it's expensive now!

This thread is making all the above worse! :p

remember you dont have to play 40k, you can play epic, or some of the other games too, epic is easier on the pocket.

but in my opinion Flames or War is better, rules are better, models are cheaper, its WW2 historically accurate.

models come from a wide range of suppliers so you can get some really nice stuff, even though the battlefront ones are very nice.

take a look.

the Grey knights codes looks very nice, i got it from my cousin Don Lode last night, and even though i wont get any models its still a nice read.

I've had the very same thoughts but I have a load of stuff from about 10 years ago up in the loft so I thought I'd have a look. Y'know if I don't have to pay anything new then the gf might cope. Also I had these visions that what I'd done all those years ago were masterpieces of creativity.

Needless to say I feel sad and somewhat disappointed in myself now :(
