Well first Terminator is KIND of done, noticed a few areas that need touching up and am really having an issue with metallic paints and getting them to go on smoothly (mostly gold).

Looking awesome guys I like how this thread is gettin some pictures up I should have my full squad of talons done tonight with the bases done i will upload once finished. How are the cultists to paint because I have 30 to do!!!

Off the top of my head its something like Polished or Glorious gold from the Vallejo game colour range with a Badab black wash on it.

But If i'm honest I'm struggling to get a nice clean layer of any colour to go on from the Vallejo range. Red and white do not seem to want to go onto a black undercoat at all and are taking 3 odd layers before being complete by which point a lot of detail is lost. Gold just seems clumpy and if you try to spread it it has the same issue as the red/white.

Try a base of Balthazar Gold and layer / highlight of Auric Armour Gold. They are GW but work for me. Also, if tbe colour scheme you want is mainly red and white you would probably be better off with a white undercoat.

The cultists are not too bad to do tbh (have 20 of them sat on my kitchen table atm so ask me once I have done those), the hellbrute is going to worst :P

It isn't mainly red or white, I was originally going to go for a Red theme but decided against it but it is mainly just adding bits of detail in those colours that I am having issues with. I will try that other gold as a base :)

Thanks

While I don't have experience with that particular paint range, I've found that in particular metallics dont go great onto a blank undercoat surface.

I would usually add a darker non metallic layer beneath the metallic. For example if I was doing a gold surface id add a matt brown or brown mixed with the gold as a very thin layer prior to the final gold layer. Helps it blend and you can get away with a thinner layer rather than just going balls deep with the gold and having to have it thick to cover.

Another example from my old Blood Angel - With bright reds, a darker reddy/brown pre-layer helps the red go on much nicer

Most of the time going staight in with the final colour onto your undercoat doesnt look as good :)

I have been doing something similar with my CSM models, except I was adding a black layer on top of the base coat and then painting the gold over the black, which can get a thick if not careful. I will try painting the gold trim with a thin brown base see if it makes things look a little better :)

It definetly helps adding a middle layer with metallics, I found especially with the GW range that they were a lot thinner that the other matt colours.

Are you a professional painter as you come across as one...

A long time ago maybe (probably rusty now!) but I still remember the tips and techniques

I used to work for GW then when they saw I had some potential I kinda got coralled into painting shop armies for new release displays.

I've also entered Golden demon once or twice back in the day.

Very nice my friend!

If you look a few posts up for mine, can you give any tips other than finer brush control on straight lines please?
