Terraria - Dig, fight, explore, build

I quite fancy playing this tonight, played it way back but it'd be nice to go through it again and see all the new stuff :)

Any servers up with you guys on? EDIT: If not i'm tempted to pay for one, I fancy starting tonight :p

A couple people have said they might start one, just waiting to see if anyone does :)

If nothings appears by the time the current set in the tennis finishes I'll put one up and post details here :)

EDIT: i set one up but multiplay say the london server option i selected is at capacity, so i've requested it to be setup elsewhere. No idea if they reply to support tickets at night. :(

While not a completely "fresh out of the door" character, does anyone have a server up/etc where they're happy to have... late geared pre-hard-mode characters around? (e.g I've dropped skeletron and have about the full set (minus trinkets) of pre-hardmode gear. Phoenix blaster, most armours, nights edge etc).

If it helps I'm a... well, pretty good builder. Not so fancy looking but if you want hoiks/tracktronics up and running and general engineering wonders (like bird powered, dart trap miniguns) I'll happily join a server with a bit of community on it and go make a corner of it home :)

So addicted to this right now but I am a bit of a noob. I am currently in full molten armour/tools with a knights edge, sunfury, flamelash and lightning boots/cobalt sheild etc. Guessing that's a good build to have but can't seem to find much on set ups.

Just preparing my world before killing wall of flesh thingy. Two more hellevators to contain the last bit of corruption and then going to do a bit of fishing for crates, but damn they take ages to dig even with mining and breathing pots.

I got very bored of hellevator digging so I just bought a ridiculous amount of dynamite and turned it into sticky dynamite.

I haven't got a server set up but I finally have all my new PC parts so I should be remedying that shortly.

I just realised yesterday that I have this in my Steam library. Never played Minecraft or anything of this ilk before. So I'm going to have a good long play on it tonight to see if I like this sort of thing. It definitely piqued my interest yesterday though, but that was just a dabble for a few minutes.

Amusingly, I couldn't be arsed with the hellavator digging this time either so went to exactly this solution :D

It so happens I have a bit of vine rope doing the whole drop now so its kinda easy to get around :)

As far as the chap above with the nights edge/molton etc, yep. That's about it. If you've cleared the dungeon (and turned the special chests into a light show so you can't miss them in future) the only thing might be setting up a "grow room" with all the herbs etc for easy potion access. You are otherwise ready for hard mode :)

I'm holding fire and building a few engineering marvels first (aforementioned dart trap miniguns and a few other base defences.

It's probably worth going a good distance (like a screen or 2) from your base and getting the 3 block wide trench dug and lined so corruption and hallow can't spread into your base :) Go down about a screen so you've got loads of building room later. Having corruption in a sealed, contained room makes farming stuff easy (you can "make" any biome with the right number of blocks for insanely easy auto farming e.g make more than 30 desert blocks and it becomes desert so mummy's start appearing. You can even activate/deactivate chunks of blocks to "make" biomes. Lots of them + huge dart gun battery make short work of farming :) )

This should give you more than a few ideas:

Incidentally, I haven't experienced Expert or Hard mode before. It seems hard mode is permanent on defeating a certain boss?

Will the server rush straight to hard mode, and will that spell instant, horrible, painful death for newbs like moi? :p

Yeah, basically, head down to the underworld. Look for the demons carrying a voodoo doll of the guide NPC. I'll not spoil too much more but erm... avoid getting it hot shall we say? :D (boss fight)

Once in hard mode hard mode mobs do instantly spawn everywhere. The surface is still... mostly ok (until you enter ice/desert/corrupt or... well it's the opposite of corrupt) biomes then you'll generally find harder enemies spawning :)
It's not like instant death by a long way, if you have good normal mode gear you'll be fine.

Once in hard mode - the... well... altars do.. stuff :) It rotates in 3's (will all become clear) but each will spawn more patches of corruption etc in a random point in the world so don't go crazy :D (I usually do 6 altars). Hard modes a lot of fun though, especially with all the event bosses/etc added.

I usually go ranger/melee so nights edge, full molten armour, minishark, phoenix blaster, necro armour and I'm ready for hard mode :) (though I usually keep full meteorite armour + space gun handy for basic exploration as the space gun doesn't use ammo once in full meteorite).

There are some AMAZING extra's in hard mode though. Teleporter pads, homing bullets, rocket launchers as a bare/crap example :) Wiring teleporters to various areas makes getting around a lot faster. Always one to dungeon, jungle, temple etc.

So... when this OcUK server (new chars only) starts, we will have to have some agreement as to when hard mode is activated. Can't have one or two people putting the server in hard mode if nobody else is ready.

Seems that with these extra modes a bit more collective cohesion will be required.

Probably worth having 2 servers then. 1 that will go hardmode asap and another "easy mode" version (maybe take a backup just prior to hard mode and run the 2 as separate forks). There's some server control software (tshock) that I would think has the option to disable hard mode switching to avoid any "idiots" causing problems.

I've done similar before for a wee group of friends and some servers hosted on a machine in-house.

This time there will likely be 4 servers.
Regular, easy
Regular, hard
Expert, easy
Expert, hard

:D

Then in about a month we'll all get bored and play something else :)

Perhaps two servers is the best option but normally even with everyone starting from fresh the world tends to progress into hard mode quite quickly as it only needs one or two players to play solidly for a few hours to get it moved along. I thought TShock was pretty much dead but if it isn't I'll see what I can do.
