Terraria - Dig, fight, explore, build

So this game, its a sandbox i get that but apart from just messing about, is there any sort of story to follow or quests or a campaige. The game looks old skool which i like but i dont wana be the one having to make my own fun as its boring to me lol but if theres something to aim for and stuff then i think i might like the game. But from what i have seen so far theres nothing to do except mess about on ur own without any sort of mission to follow.

So can someone let me know if its just sandbox or is it sandbox but also has stuff to do as in missions and their's a endgame of sorts?

There's no endgame, but you've certainly got some element of progression you can follow.

Working out how to get some items, and then slowly getting tougher and stronger until you can go anywhere and do what you want. :)

Well here's a few tips to get you going:

- Build a house so you're protected from the zombie invasion at night. You'll want to craft an anvil, workbench and furnace. You will use these to craft items. Make some room for chests too.
- Start collecting ore to make better armour, pickaxes and so on. The tier goes copper -> iron -> silver -> gold then you have various ore above that such as demonite and hellstone. You don't need actual recipes to craft new stuff, just the materials. Armour, pickaxes and so on usually just need a certain amount of smelted bars. Potions for example are a bit more random in the materials used though so you may want to refer to the wiki for such things.
- The best stuff is found in chests although the rarest item in the game (sunfury) has a small chance of dropping from a creature in hell. I'm not sure which but I just randomly found one in my inventory :)
- Once you meet certain criteria, merchants will move into a suitably built house you have made for them. Check the screenshots in this thread to see examples.

There isn't a single objective within this game. You do what you wanna do within the limitations of your character.

I'm not really sure what I can do now. I've been digging down again, got myself 3 life crystals so up to 160hp now. Got enough gold for a Golden Hammer and Pickaxe and some almost a set of Iron armour. Been down to about 1000ft, started to encounter some lava and ran out of room so decided to turn back. Came across a few pieces of Demonite but nowhere near enough to be useful and I obviously can't mine any Obsidian. Got the Cloud in a Bottle which is great for getting around.

What should I aim for now or should I just continue mining further?

Last thing that happened before I quit was I finally got to the surface just in time for a Blood Moon, so prepare for a night of zombie killing :p

Sounds like I'm in the same sort of state as you Evilsod. I'm in a mix of gold and silver armour with a gold long sword and the cloud in a bottle.

I'm not sure where to go next really, I tried to go into corruption area but got annihilated by a lot of flying things that just kept respawning.

Then I went down into the underground and got killed by a huge flying snake!

Armour set, better pickaxe and better weapons (there's quiet a variety and all fun to use) so basically just go mine. I'd save the gold for a new pickaxe and perhaps craft a iron/silver armour set. You'll no doubt encounter some chests as you mine into new areas.

I already have the gold pickaxe and hammer :p The last trip was fairly successful in terms of Silver I think so I might be able to upgrade 1 or 2 pieces of armour just as soon as I get a break from the zombies.

I did go for a wander to the left (Corruption is the right side) and built a fortified tower in the middle of the desert but there didn't seem to be anything over there, just another patch of forest followed by a more desert so I turned back.

As Shami said... the corruption will probably own me. I've found several gold chests and got the odd bit of decent loot from there but nothing spectacular.

Well the best loot I've found was in the castle but you need to defeat an old man that morphs into a dragon before you can enter and he's pretty solid. You just need more defence and more HP :) Be sure to constantly use HP potions. A bow with fire arrows is probably the best weapon early in the game.

I've mostly been owning everything with my golden pickaxe :p Sword gives way too much knockback to kill anything quickly unless you trap them against something and theres no point me upgrading that till Gold because of the speed increase.

If you've got iron armor, you can take out the Eye Of Cthulhu and Eater Of Worlds bosses easily. Skeletron (the boss guarding the dungeon, sometimes called castle), is requires a decent weapon to beat, such as a flail, a minishark, or anything in the middle.

You can go to the corruption area and break shadow orbs, go to the jungle looking for some nice gear (collecting stingers/vines/roses and keeping them, they are very useful!), maybe a meteor or two will fall. Once you've beaten Skeletron you can venture in to the dungeon. Once you've got full Shadow, Necro, or gold armor you can take on the Underworld fairly easily if you know what you're doing.

Well atm I'm hiding down a hole in the corruption area with a layer of stone above my head to keep the the Eaters away :p

Valid tactic :D

When me and my mate were wee nabs we got to hell pretty quickly. We refused to come back later though so we built an elevated tunnel through a large section of hell. When we saw a chest below we would just build a little tunnel down towards it :D

For the Eye Of Cthulhu, ranged weapons. If you don't have anything decent, buy shurikens from the Merchant. 2 stacks is plenty. Bring a few healing potions too.
