Terraria - Dig, fight, explore, build

Well i found a world viewer that would play nicely with Linux (Python):

Red is about the limit of my exploration, green is stuff i have absolutely no clue what it even is. Not sure what i should do next, i have a gold pick, mining helmet, band of regeneration and hermes boots (as well as a trident), i just can't seem to find anything that wants to drop a hook.

man i wish i knew what the hell i was doing in this game, seems great fun. But like minecraft im useless at it without the help of console commands to give me resources :p

Not knowing very much about what to do/ how to do it in this game, is there an OCUK server we can bash about on without smashing everyone's stuff or are people playing mainly single player?

I've got a few spare hooks and other random stuff for noobs but it's on my mate's server :/ I'll try hoard some stuff when he's next online so I can sort a few people out.

Tbh I find the sword to be useless most the time. Only time I find it any use is when the enemy can't be knocked back out of range. Pickaxe gets the job done early game and my Boomerang/Vilethorn deal with most of the enemies in The Corruption/Jungle Underground. Sword only gets a look-in when I'm fighting Man Eaters in the right position.

Make yourself a bed (Cobwebs ---> Silk + Wood). Out of interest do people build 'break rooms' at various points so they can create spawn points all over the map?

Try to get a set of armour. Didn't realise they gave you set bonus', so well worth making a full set of Copper (since you don't need to use it for anything else) till you can upgrade to Silver and craft them into a jungle set.

@Perma - Green looks like Corruption (the bit with the deep chasms) and the really green bit is the Jungle. Far left bit is the Dungeon maybe? Bottom bit is Hell.

I try to do that, but it doesn't help that whenever i alt-tab to another window the game crashes :p

Run it in windowed. Whenever I start it up it begins in 800x600 but 2 quick Alt + Enters and it goes back to 1600x900 so theres still space around the outside and I can tab between windows fine. Helps for pausing too since the inventory doesn't do it.

Hmm, thanks. A lot left to learn i see :D

Oh, and the armour tip - i noticed that when i had a full set of copper, where it all falls down of course is where you have a mining helmet.

I've always been tempted to get a Mining Helmet but by the time I could afford it I just didn't see the point. I've got tons of Wood and Gel for Torches, I've found plenty of Glowsticks (and can buy more) and converted them all to Sticky Glowsticks. There are the odd situations where it would be useful but I'd lose about 5 defence now with my Silver Helmet.

I think i tried that, i don't think it's a problem with the game itself so much as running the game in Wine. If it doesn't have focus i get an exception... which is sometimes useful since the exit button just turns it into a zombie process, which i then have to end manually :p

Oh, and inventory pausing is an option you have to enable.

Really? For me it was just main menu - settings/options or whatever then i think the one second or third from the bottom. It does pause it every time you go in the inventory though.

Same here, by the time I've got 8 gold coins, I have smashed enough shadow orbs to get an Orb of Light, leaving no need for a mining helmet.

Shaddap :p

I had about 20-25 gold coins before I smashed a Shadow Orb (bloody expensive Dynamite), got the Musket (seems to be guaranteed first drop) and the Vilethorn. Don't wanna break the 3rd till I get Jungle armour for fighting the Eater of Worlds. Least now the Dryad is here so I can buy Purification Powder and save on Dynamite.

Just seemed everytime I went near the Corruption I'd get slaughtered by the Eaters. Now I've built a stone tunnel with lots of doors across the entire length of it and can simply run over the top of it now because it blocks most of the Eaters (if they even spawn anymore...).
