Terraria - Dig, fight, explore, build

I really want rocket boots :( - possibly another feral glove too, but rocket boots are all I need. Where is a Goblin invasion when I need one?
I think I have a spare pair of rocket boots (again!) if you want them. When I wanted a pair it took me forever to find one, now that I have one, I think I've given away like 7 in the last 10 days!

I smashed a load of orbs in the corruption and fought two EoWs.

I got a Vilethorn, 2 muskets, and 3 orbs of light ... The only thing I'm missing is the flail weapon that drops.

I also got 3 meteor crashes from that and fully mined two of them but the last is up on a floaty island :(

Wanna swap? I've smashed about 11 of them (7 or 8 from this world, 3 from another I jumped onto to search for some Orbs). 2 Muskets (from the first orb of each world), about 3 Vilethorns, 3 Ball o Hurts and the rest were Starbands. Not a single Orb of Light at all.

I agree that shadow armour is 'too good' relative to meteorite armor considering how close you get both, but meteorite is great for the hamaxe. Saves a slot, and was probably my main weapon at that point.
And it's used to make collectable crap like phaseblades and such.

Tbh I think the Meteor is pointless in its current incarnation. As far as I know the only time a Meteor can impact is after breaking a Shadow Orb. It took 6 of them before 1 fell by which point I'd already made Nightmare items from the Demonite Ore/Shadow Scales and I'd created considerably stronger weapons (and a full set of Jungle Armour) already. I didn't bother crafting a Hamaxe, I just waited till I'd got some Hellstone/Obsidian and crafted those instead. Seemed a waste of Meteor Bars.

As for Floating Islands... the problem is is there any way to know they even exist short of getting a very lucky with them being low or above a high hill? They're really just a handy source of gold/silver ores early game and a little loot from the chest, but first you need to get hold of a Gravitation Potion and you'll probably get slaughtered by the Harpies unless you simply hide.

Afaik, the floating islands are the only place to find the Lucky Horseshoe, Shiny Red Balloon, and the Starfury weapon. They're always useful. :) The only ways to find them without using a Map Viewer are to either make sky bridges across the map and hope you find one, or run across the map shooting up in the air with meteors shots. If they hit an island, they will bounce back down.

Starfury would be very useful to find early on, but the Lucky Horseshoe or the Shiny Red Balloon aren't exactly critical. The Cloud in a Bottle is considerably more useful than the Shiny Red Balloon (unless you want to use it with Rocket Boots which are certainly NOT an early game item) and the Lucky Horseshoe would merely be handy to have. By that point in the game you'd get more use out of the ores.

yes, use a gun with re-useable ammo, if the ammo falls back down quite quickly then you have a floating island.

Realistically you won't have a gun with ammo to waste that freely that early in the game and lets be honest, a floating island takes up a tiny fraction of the available sky. My small world has only 2 of them, the wiki says a small world is about 4300 blocks wide so you'd be lucky if the Floating Islands covered even 3% of that. Your only real hope is a Gravitation Potion.

I don't see what's so bad about the lucky horseshoe or the shiny red balloon. They're both handy for long travels, I always keep them in my inventory, along with rocket boots, hermes boots, necro armor, cloud in a bottle and a cobalt shield. By the time I usually find a floating island I have little use for gold or silver, they are both easy enough to find if you want them for jungle/molten armor. The starfury weapon can do up to 60 damage per swing, it's handy for a mid level character, and is a bit of fun for a high level character. I've always found all three items worth keeping in my inventory. Difference in opinion I guess. :)

I never said they were bad, I said they were of very limited use to a char until end game. The Balloon in particular is useless to a character (compared with the Cloud in a Bottle) until they get the Rocket Boots. Lucky Horseshoe is mainly useful for things like a hellevator incase people put things in the way. Other than that the only real use it gets is jumping down Chasms and protecting against the odd mistake where you panicked and didn't use your Grappling Hook. Its something you shouldn't really rely on.

Put your hands up if you think terrariarrrrr ocuk server should be hardcore! :D

*glues your hands to your side* :p

King Slime is a very dull boss >< Found my 2nd one earlier, either you can try and fight it in melee which means it always hits you unless you run away when it does its low jump or you simply dig a small hole and spam it with ranged attacks while it can't touch you.

The horseshoe is essential for speedy overworld travel!
Potions could be an alternative to it I guess.

The horseshoe? Balloon, Cloud, Rocket and Hermes would be where its at there.

Does anyone know whats supposed to be in the new patch? (probably released next friday right?) Think I saw something about overhauling the magic system but nothing major.

Hermes, Rocket, Shield, Horseshoe, Balloon.

Rocket and Hermes are no-brainers for speedy overworld travel.
Shield to keep momentum even if you get hit.
Balloon to increase rocket efficiency, which is the key to maintaining momentum from hermes.
Horseshoe so that you don't die from all the falls.

Cloud adds nothing relative to what you get from Balloon + Rocket boots anyway.

We could have a race with each of our setups ;) No potions.

I've tried both setups before. You will either die very fast without horseshoe, OR, you will use rocket boots in a sparing way to prevent fall damage, but that means that more often than not, you will land on areas where you can't maintain the momentum from the hermes boots.

If you're using rocket boots so much you're suffering fall damage then how can you possibly maintain speed? You can't even SEE the ground from that high up and given that you have no rocket left and no other way of moving over obstacles, you are even more likely to land on/in an object that prevents you moving forwards. You're supposed to be going just over obstacles not way up in the sky.
