Thank god my car is pre 2001 (Car Tax changes)

I'll just stick to pre 2001 cars until I find something that will justify the high tax. (I have no intention of a buying a 1l tin can, so whatever i get will cost a lot).

You also have the safety side to consider as people on a tight budget will be forced in to buying older cars with less safety gear, instead of putting the money they would have saved in tax into buying something more modern.

Problem is there is no guarantee that the government wont hit pre 2001 cars in future budgets. That could easily argue that older cars are less efficient and produce more c02.

As this bankrupt economy gets worse they are bound to get more and more desperate to raise money.

They might, but the difference is with post 2001 there is recorded levels of CO2 which the tax is based on. With the older cars there is not, so it's impossible to blanket every old car and say it's less efficient and produces more CO2. It has to be backed with evidence that this is the case.

They use to do it by engine size so they could easily work along those lines.

I was amazed when my dad told me there used to be a tax on daylight! The bigger your windows in ** house the more tax you paid. God, please dont let Gordon Brown/Labour know about that one. I'll be safe with my old 1999 car but i'm still getting shafted with the fuel tax :(
I remember what was it 9/10 years ago when there were the last big protests on the price of fuel, and even then it was no where near as expensive as it is now. Dont forget to blame the oil companies too though.. Aparently it costs less than $10/barrel to produce oil yet it sells for nearly $120/barrel

It's disgusting what they are doing with this. I don't understand how they can justify back-dating a tax bracket. If we all go out and buy new cars, the pollution involved in building them far outweighs the CO2 saved by replacing an older car. And anyway, are 2005 cars going to be scrapped or taken of the road? No, they will just devalue.

Yet more taxation under the banner of environmentalism. It makes me sick.

Yup, it's pretty unfair backdating the increased tax rates. I bet quite a few people will trade in circa 2-3 year old cars to buy a new one which falls in a lower tax bracket.

£260 a year for my Mondeo 1.8 from Oct 2009 (I'll be buying 12months tax at the lower rate this october)

I'm happy, I'll be saving money next year if this goes ahead. Tough luck to all you muppets with your large smelly motors! Losing out on fuel costs and now this, what's next?

Ah well, could be worse, we might have to drive around in crap cars :)

Nobody said crap, just ones that don't eat at your pocket. As someone mentioned earlier it's easy to dodge this tax, but if some of you want to pay it along with the school run mums, feel free ;)
