Thank god my car is pre 2001 (Car Tax changes)

Just think, if he aspires to own an M5 he could be paying for cheap tax and driving a 520d Sport which looks the same. Instead he choses a cheap plastic Aygo and calls US muppets? LOL

Wait until he gets hitched and drops sprogs. the Aygo will be just the ticket then:rolleyes:
Oh no, he will have to buy a family saloon which, guess what, will be in the stupid tax bracket.
Attitudes will change then;)

Or a 4x4.

I know it's not directly related to parlimentary politics, but I really hope labour get a damn good whipping today. Hopfully make the people at the top relise that the little people arn't happy about being squeezed for all we're worth.

I've always felt Car Tax is highly in inefficient and since we now have computised systems that let police check for the presence of an MOT and insurance it's now pointless.

I don't think I want to know how much of the cost of a disc goes into car tax administration. I did hear one of their recent schemes for reduce evasion cost three times the amount of money it recovered.

I'm happy, I'll be saving money next year if this goes ahead. Tough luck to all you muppets with your large smelly motors! Losing out on fuel costs and now this, what's next?

Yes, perhaps, but you'll also look like a complete tool driving around in a portaloo on wheels, with no horsepower to do anything. You simply can't put a price on that.

I drive an Aygo, as it's about the only newish small car that doens't get wrecked in my area, try parking anything here that's flashy, it'll be keyed within a few hours!

Thats really a rubbish additional justification for your choice of car. Well I'll be equally as short sighted and say you should move away from the **** hole you live in and then it won't be an issue! ;)

I live in a city, drive up to 40,000 miles a year for work. My mileage money I get back pays for my car - my entire car + fuel + insurance + tyres. If I drove my old car (2ltr turbo) that wouldn't be the case.

"good car" is up for debate from one person to the next, I'd be crucified on insurance alone thanks to the area I live in. At the moment it's a case of fitting the car into the area, rather than getting the one I'd ideally like (M5).

If you were to fit the car to the area, you're implying you can afford to run an M5, but you're area wont allow it. I cant afford to run an M5, but my finances are enough that I dont have to drive a tin can, yet still can reasonably afford what else I want.

Thing is Kami,

I can tell that the cost of car tax is a big issue to you and it was somthing you obviousely considered when you bought your car.

Surely then you can understand that it's grossely unfair for the government to change the prices for existing cars. If someone decides that they could justify £200 a year to tax then it's unfair that it doubles.

It's fairer to apply it just to new cars, so they only people effected know about when they choose a car.

I suppose the question is whether the Blues would do anythin differently?

I drive a diesel VW Polo, which I know isn't awesome, but tax goes down this year so I'm not complaining.

Shame I've got my eye on a Mercedes S500. Jez - I'll have to pick your brains at some point, if possible?

Or, maybe I could convince my wife that a baby-seat would fit in the back of my previously proposed 850CSI... :(

The 5 litre is the engine to have, just make sure it has FSH and check ALL the electrics, there is absolutely loads to go wrong. Most of the data communication is fibre optic, so check ALL functions of the airmatics and computer systems. If any of them dont work it will cost more than the car to fix them. :)

When buying a used S Class don't spend your budget on it. For example if you want a £15k car, buy a £10k S Class and have £5k spare to run it. This way running it will be an enjoyable and not scary experience.

If you have £10k to spend and spend £10k on one you'll quickly regret it.

Depends if you get lucky and have DIY abilities i guess. I have fixed a few things myself on mine saving hundreds. As a result in 20k miles its cost less than about 2 grand in maintenance and servicing, which imo isnt bad at all. But yeah, keep a good bit in the bank, it can easily throw the odd £500-1000 repair up every now and again, ive just been lucky with mine. As they get on the airmatic pumps are likely to start going however, along with the struts. Either buy one with new airtmatics or budget a good 3-5 grand for a repair of the struts and pump replacement.
