*** The 2010 Gym Rats Thread ***

This, it goes insta-half price in tesco after about 7pm or something, whenever the cooked chicken/meat counter is closing, i got a whole cooked chicken for £1.75 or something a few weeks ago :)

Also managed to pick up 14 slices of cooked roast chicken from the where they take fresh cuts, original price was £3.50, ended up paying 35p (yes, £0.35) for the lot (reduced section ***!)

Did legs on tuesday and had planned on doing back today w/ deadlifts included, my glutes are still sore, should i jump straight in or wait another day and do the dead lifts seperately tomorrow?

2 days should be enough rest, do them today. when was the last time you took a week off altogether?

calling OCuk gym rats back day tommorow morning (9am deadlifts ). If I can do a working set at 145x5rep max how should I pyramid up to a 1 rep max?

I've got the same thing (normally do legs on monday) but I'm gunning right for it tomorrow.

135 x 10

140 x 6

145 x 2

147.5 x 1

150 x 1

152.5 x 1

something like that maybe? make sure you do a warm up and dont jump in at 135kg obviously.

Out of interest anyone know where to buy bulk mixed nuts from?

makro :D

lol

seriously though, i would try to buy different nuts in bulk then mix them up yourself and stick them in a large container. never done it before but supermarkets are probably the cheapest place to buy from, their buying power due to economies of scale is frighteningly powerful.

maybe even lidl? or is it aldi? whatever that ***** supermarket is called anyway.

Whole chickens for 50p in Asda before!

I would disagree with this as I personally think that's too much volume before a 1RM. If it was me and this is what I've done before:

60KG x 10
110KG x 8
130KG x 4
150KG x 3
170KG x 2
190KG x 1
200KG x 1

Bigger jumps basically. 145KG is your 5RM not 1RM. You don't want to be maxing out on any set before you try for a 1RM.

For you something like:

60KG x 10
100KG x 6
120KG x 3
140KG x 2
155KG x 1
157.5KG/160KG/165KG depending on how 155Kg felt. Can usually get around 15-20KG ontop of my 5RM.

Just warm up and then pull tripples/doubles/singles upto your working weight. If 150KG feels good don't **** around with 152.5KG go straight for a 155KG. Once you know your 1RM faff about with 2.5/1.5/0.5 increases.

Edit: For nuts I had a friend grab me a massive bag of Walnuts from Costco on the cheap. Then I just buy almonds, cashews and brazils and mix them up with some sultana's thrown in. The bags of dried fruit from costco are a nice treat too :)

In that case I'd work upto 145KG for a double and then go in at 160/165KG depending on how you feel.

I've read a lot of people will have a stab at a certain weight 2-3 times if they fail first time. I usually won't try more than once. If I don't get it the first time I don't bother with a second! I'm usually so spent from the first attempt I know I won't get it!

Things like a squat/bench where you have the negative to take into account and the loss of control or too much momentum usually warrant a few attempts, imo.

if you know somebody who has their own business then borrow their card, honestly, im trying to save you money here, stop being so pedantic. if you dont like my advice, ignore it.

Heh...don't, you obviously are NOT helping :p ;)

Try not to help so much eh? ;)

mmmmmm cashews are my favourite, i used to buy them 2-3 times a week from asda, until they practically doubled the price. they are extortionate, i dont know if the price hike was to do with seasons? or if they have a season tbh?

i have found holland and barrett to be quite expensive for stuff.

even with their offer

http://www.hollandandbarrett.com/pages/categories.asp?cid=129

£1.05 per 100g

asda are cheaper

64p per 100g to £1.70 per 100g depending on make and type

Weird...every time i goto a supermarket, they are always well expensive...maybe i got in on the buyone get one free stage and HandB :p

Either way, i cant go shopping in three different supermarkets

tesco sell almonds for about £7/kg, but they are hidden away in the cooking ingredients department, the visible ones are about a tenner per kg.
It's a 800gram bag from East End or something, not bad price.
Alternetvely you can grab both hazelnuts and almonds for about £7/kg from Aldi as well.

Oh bugger!

I must say as someone that's never really done bicep isolation before, it is really really tough!

I've done some bicep curls here and there before on an off day but never something proper.
I've always lived by compounds and Pullups and Chinups to help build my biceps.

Training partner talked me into doing some 7ft barbell curls today.
Sure I say, can't be that hard, I dip +30kg and do wide grip pullups with +15kg. Should be easy enough.

Like hell it was, 40kg and I was wrecked, sure it was our last thing of the day, after doing Back training.

My friend can barely do 4 pullups and he beat me easily at bicep curls. Had to drop to 35kg, even then it felt just as hard.

Then down to 30kg and still hard. usually as weight goes down it gets easier, but it's the first real time I've isolated my bicep with decent form and weight.

Was breathing out heavily, forearms and biceps screaming in pain along with my back starting to arch inward as my body was trying to use any advantage it could. Wether that was gravity, momentum or my legs.

Never felt so weak before in there since my first few months.

My biceps are seriously my weakest part at the moment.

It seems I found yet another challenge, to overcome. I'm actually looking forward to it.

So now my goals are 200kg deadlift, 170kg squat, 38.8kg dumbbell bench press and getting my biceps to an acceptable level with proper form, say that 40kg curl for full working sets.

If you guys are looking for cheap chicken, there are 1kg bags of frozen, boneless, skinless chicken breasts in tesco for £1.50. You get 4 in the bag, so that's under 40p per breast. Sure there's added water for that extra "succulence", but that's pretty hard to beat for convenience and they don't taste bad either!

N19h7m4r3, I'm aiming to be lifting about the same by the end of the year. You'll definitely have me on the squats though, I can only manage 125 for reps! Did 140 once for one, but that was a fluke and I haven't been anywhere near that weight since. I'm interested to see how much I can deadlift though, I've been stuck with 175 for the last few weeks simply because that's all the weight I have, I'll see what happens when another 2x20kg plates arrive in a few days.

is it on sale? the normal tesco market value 1kg frozen one is £3.50 per kg (which is still not bad at all) but I've never seen them on special offers.
