The 2011 Chilli growing thread - it's scorching!

For mine? Do you think that might help them get bigger?

Thanks :)

Long term yes.
They seem to suck a lot of nutrients up so small pots arent great. I went from slightly smaller than that to full size pots, whish I used slightly bigger pots. I also use feed to ensure they don't suck the pots dry of all nutrients.

Time for a repot mate go for somit like 8in pots or 7in.

If you want snip the buds off as there too small to be budding they need better growth first. And give em a dose of nitrogen feed to encourage growth.

Aphid attack ! Grrrr

Hi All

My plants were doing very well up until about 2-3 weeks ago, I had lots of flowers, but then suffered an aphid attack. I am using a spray with washing up liquid+water in, and it does help somewhat, but the flowers/buds are wrecked.

Should I cut off all the diseased leaves/buds and hope the plant will reflower/rebud ? Any other good aphid remedies ?

Here are the pics . . . . .

Great, thanks for the advice both of you. I'll pop down the garden centre and get some pots and get them sorted :)

I feel you pain.....

Mine are in the same condition :( spotted a few whitefly on two of my plants a couple of weeks ago, checked under the leaves of all the rest and there were hundereds of eggs......took ages to spray each one and scrape all the eggs off each leaf, the leaves and flower heads looked exactly like yours, I just pulled the flower heads off and left the leaves to see if they recover to grow more

Not a lot you can do really other than buy some ladybirds / lacewing of the internet but you really need a greenhouse to keep them from leaving once they have fed

Managed to kill the whitefly but still spraying with water and washing up liquid every couple of days now as they keep coming back

Picked the first apache chilli (big one in last pic i showed). Was just 1 and it made my noodles very hot lol. Very nice tho. Even tho its green it was pretty much done cept change color and u can have em green or red depends what u fancy. I liked it before when i had em green so picked it when green but at least good size.

My peppers seem to be getting brown leaves at the edges then eventually shrivling up and dying, by the looks of things this is only one type of plant, but hard to tell as they are all 6 to 8inches.
Any idea of the cause? One thought is that the heat/sun is burning them and the leaves and plants are too young to cope.

Also thinking about getting a grow light as they seem slow as anything. Any suggestions? <ain concern is obviously police thinking I have a hash factory.

Well I haven't been raided yet, however due to increase of room temp as it's summer. I'm leaving the cupboard door open. At night when I leave my curtains open. It looks like I have a sun in my room, it looks and feels like daylight.

One of my apache plants on window in kitchen had a load of greenfly and larve on much of the bottom leaves and flowers. Sprayed with water and a good dollop of fairy up liquid and it seems to be getting rid of em, have to spray loads of times tho, luckily it doesnt seem to cause the plant much trouble thank lord.

My dying plants =[

Other thought is being under an open window is cuasing them to get damn cold and shrivling up to die =[

Just a quick question, first time I've grown chillis but I've counted roughly 200 flower buds on my Red Cayenne, can i expect a yield of this many or will many not bear fruit as the lower ones ripen and it sheds the upper flowers?

I wouldn't expect fruit from all flowers, so don't worry about being completely crushed under the weight of your Cayennes. But you can expect a lot.

I've got two plants and probably the first 10 or 12 flowers on each have produced fruit and then since this point its been 50:50. Half the flowers just dropping off and the other half going on to produce fruit.

I've just re-read your post. You can't mean 200 flowers on ONE plant?

Yeah I thought that was a bit off went to count again and its more like 100 buds(First counting technique i used was based on counting a small section and scaling for each branch off, just happened to pick the most mature section :o so the calculation was off by a double) Done a more thorough counting though and its probably 80-100

must be a massive plant if there are that many on the one plant .

All depends on the weather. If you are getting the same crappy weather as we are here then you can expect a fair few to drop off and not fruit. Also if you do have loads of fruits setting on one plant i'd make sure the pot is big enough or you will end up with lots of smaller chillies.
