*** The 2013 Gym Rats Thread ***

that is the funny thing.. im the only one lifting! dunno why but machines just don't feel right for me.. i get a better workout with free weights too!

Fixed for you :)

As a side point, anyone have some advice on improving grip strength? There's no way I'm getting straps at the weight I'm at.

Was thinking:
Get heavy bar, load up heavy bar, one deadlift, and hold until grip fails?

kd

Hanging raises and rack/box dead lifts. Also if you are doing a double overhand grip for deads you can try out a mixed grip. :D

Looks like me and LiE are switching gyms, deadlifting with round plates, and some occasional support for delvis, OMG the gains are going to be massive.

Question: what is the powerlifting standard for plate diameter, and floor to centre of bar height for deadlifts.
The 25kg plates at pure gym at 17" across so 8.5" to centre, and the 20's are 16"/8" to centre. Just wondering if it will be ok to use the 25's on my first Deadlift session on friday :)

Cool :) Hopefully see you guys there then! Will have to organise the odd Saturday session or something just to have a smash every now and then.

Told you the 20's where smaller ;) No wonder I found the 25kg plates nicer to work with at Kiss.

Lucky you. Those plates at DW really do start to grate on you don't they.

Paz, there is a Pure opening in Dunstable as well I think (Feb time)...Might be worth taking a gander or something

You are not the form nazi I'd hoped you'd be ;)

I agree....I'm not in the form I want to be in either :o

Its not so much that my grip/forearm strength....its more the skin on my hands hurts like hell

I agree grip strength is easy enough to improve...i just prefer not to let it limit me in what I can lift, and for me its always been my limiting factor....oh and no I've never concentrated on just grip, which probably says WHY its my limiting factor

I think very few people here have concentrated on just grip! What are your lifts like, as ice said it would be surprising if your skin is tearing/grip is failing u less your lifts are mighty impressive. Many guys here deadlifting 200+ with just chalk, and no tearing.

Yeap, when they asked why we were leaving the first reason I gave was the stupid hex plates. The managers response was "I can bring it up with the general manager and we can look in to replacing the hex plates with round ones" to which I replied "if you were to do that it would probably cost in the region of 10k" to which she looked quite suprised. Why on earth they got hex plates in the first place I don't know, but I hope I don't have to go back.

My only problem is to unrack from the squat rack will be fun as I am to short for the upper set of catchers by about an inch, so when things get heavy I will be partial squatting just to unrack, might have to invest in two planks of would :D

Gah! Missing a workout tonight due to my right calf deciding to be utterly useless! I'm thinking I must have pulled it somehow

Shall have a go tomorrow instead :)

Interesting Syla5. I trained in a DW up North (Preston or Sheffield, cant remember which one) and they had round plates so maybe it's possible. Our DW is basically falling apart which also really annoys me considering the £38 they charge each member per month. Also curious about the MK DW - do you have enough clips for the number of bars? There are about 6 7ft barbells, 2 ez bars and a couple of hammer bars yet only 5 pairs of clips :(

There's a couple of really good spit and sawdust gyms in Dunstable but they get so busy in the evenings you can't really do anything. One is looking to expand so that's an option, as is the pure gym that's opening up.

Aye there is, but the 36kg DB limit doesn't appeal to me. It's also right on the border with Luton which will bring the same bunch of ******* that used to train at the Fitness First its replacing. My old kickboxing club used the studio for a while for the sparring class (as it was a good size) a year or so ago and it descended into chaos with the Luton asians (NB no offence meant, it's just how it is) getting upset and kicking off when they got clipped (they got access to the class for free as they were FF members).

Well there's enough clips but at the moment only 1 fixed bench lol. Also for some reason 90% of the 15kg plates are downstairs, making plates a shortage upstairs sometimes. Sadly no spit and sawdust gyms in mk, at least not convenient to me, or that I have found. Also I would be shocked if the changed the plates based in 2 members say so! No one else deadlifts to mention it as a reason to leave :(

Aye, the 36kg limit is going to annoy me eventually, but it's better than where I am now :)

Syla5, the only things close to saw dust gyms here are atlas (which Ive not really seen) and there is one in Leighton Buzzard I think, but a bit of a trek (called the Colosseum I think)

You may as well all come to Dunstable sometime. Prime MMA has an excellent weights area that is empty on Saturday's and is only £3 a session ;)

Good back session tonight,Moving over to a more strength focussed routine.

Deadlift

100kg x 8
180kg x 5
200 x 3 (NO STRAPS OMG!)
220kg x2
240 x 2
250 x 1

Power cleans

75 x 5
85 x 5
95 x 5
100kg x 3 (with press to show off, haaaard!)

Bunch of 10 rep cable rows of all kinds

Felt good to do strength stuff, deadlifts were solid felt strong. Little bro pulled a 200kg @ 72kb BW too pretty awesome!

Cardio.

How do I get the most out of it?

Is it worth doing 20 mins after weights or saving it untill dedicated cardio days? (Even both?)

Today I did 20mins HIIT on the Eliptical, build up a sweat. (200 calories burnt)
