*** The 2013 Gym Rats Thread ***

When my doh fails I just switch to mixed, still getting used to mixed though, feels like it puts my body in a different position.

Also, I go underhand with my left hand rather than my right....even though I'm right handed :o I am cack handed at the dinner table though.

Speaking of deadlifs, yesterday I was feeling great due to this new pre-workout thinghie I made so despite the 10grams of carbs throughout the day I pulled 180 for 6. Had to stop and alternate my alternate grip halfway through though.
My pathetic excuse for a gym for which I foolishly signed up for a year in October :( doesn't allow chalk. :(

Liquid chalk? Hardly makes a mess

It's pathetic how a gym doesn't allow chalk, why the hell put weights in a gym if you can't use chalk to move the weight???? =/

Honestly for deadlifts you don't need straps. Chalk and alternating grip is very strong. I don't train grip and had no issues even pulling 250.

I love you LiE, I really do - but it doesn't half irk me when you post things like this :p

You not needing straps to pull 250 does NOT mean anyone else not needing straps to pull 250!

I don't need to use straps for my working sets on deadlifts, I just use mixed grip and no chalk. But I wouldn't make such a blanket statement :p Some people might need additional grip training, some peoples grip may be so diminished that they won't want to sacrifice their deadlifting power :)

I have awful grip aswell, DOH stops around 120kg, but mixed grip + chalk has got me to 160kg for 1 ok. I use straps for reps though.

This!....

Precisely what I've been/was doing wrong and how i got my skin to tear...
The line i had was exactly like that on my hand!
Thanks for the vid...least i can correct my grip now :)

Ignore gym, use liquid chalk, profit.

Grip can get worse though - in my long term absence from the gym, it has got worse. I used to DOH 200kg on deads without need to mix grip until the 3rd rep or so. Now, it's a struggle to DOH at not much over 160 :(

New gym and squat rack appears to be just to high for me to comfortably unrack, so it would appear that my unrack is going to be at a sub optimal height, possibly 4 inches lower then what i am used to.

Is this going to be a massive issue. In my head i cant see it being so other then i have to do a small partial of the lift, as long as i get tight on the bar before i move anything should be fine?

Don't be sad brah ;)

I was deadlifting about 160 when I used straps. Then I was told to ditch them in favour of the above, and never had a problem transitioning. I assume it shouldn't be difficult for most.

The key is to keep your hands closed around the bar, and not open them :p

A guy i work with is a member...he's on it most days in work...usually car stuff
He got me into reading the forums in work when i get bored or at lunch time and suggested i read the sports arena

I could join a weight lifting forum and speak to an equally random bunch of strangers but i liked the banter and motivation i read on here between members *shrug*

It's funny isnt it, there are a lot of people in the "Life" forums on here that don't venture outside of the life area :D
So while its quite a geeky based forum, the general forums are littered with non geeky people who found their way here because of the banter of the members :D

It's always good to have new people on here, regardless of their reason for joining :)

Come under the bar with dat wide stance.

My grip sucks, I use straps for pretty much anything over 200kg and tbh I like being able to use my hands after a heavy pulling session.

Having said that, sometimes you just need to pull without them and this surprised me at my last comp (that didnt allow straps):

So, straps didn't actually stop me pulling a decent amount at all. So use straps if you want to, if you aren't aiming to compete in a comp that doesn't allow them then get them on and get stronger :)

I find my grip starts to fail when BOR's get heavy but so far haven't taken to using anything to aid it. Luckily we are allowed to use chalk in the gym so when the time comes I can just chalk up

MTFU! :D

You're hands will get used to it after a good bit of time. My hands used to crack and bleed often when I first started but after I switched to using liquid chalk and keeping my hands tight not letting them slip about during reps they toughend up. I have no problem pulling 200 and 240 from a box now, although I'm not great at doh after 130 partly because I can't lock my thumbs becuase i have small hands, you just have to train you're grip strength more ;)

When the time comes? I rarely do a set of anything without chalk :p
If my hands are involved in any way - chalk up :D
