*** The 2013 Gym Rats Thread ***

One thing in my work gym I really don't understand, the squat rack & even the barbell bench are pretty much never used.

This is obviously fantastic for me, as it means I don't really have to wait to use them ever, but is it normal for a gym to have both smith machines in use constantly & never the squat rack/standard bench?.

Not to mention the only people who do squat, use the smith machine & only do about half a squat...

I just noticed today during my workout (a bit of an odd one today as fitting in 2 days of my split set due to getting a tattoo tomorrow & no gym for a few days after - silly I know, but didn't want to fall behind :p) - that nobody else was doing what I'd call the standard lifts bench press, squats, dead-lifts, overhead etc.

me and my brother are the only ones that do overhead presses with oly bar at our gym.. tbh not only oly bar we're the only ones that do it, i don't think i've seen anyone do them thorough the 7+months i've been a member of it, plus i got asked a few times what it is?!

deadlifts.. only a few guys do it..

squats 3-5 guys do it..

benches.. everyone does them dumbell, bar, smith w/e the rack is always taken!

Yup, pretty much the same in any other gym I've been in really. I just love people watching and the hilarity of some of the exercises. I just want to shout over at them "WHAT THE HELL DO YOU THINK YOU'RE DOING???". So many fails. It's worse when they actually attempt DL though, throw a ridiculous amount of weight on the bar and have a back like a hump back bridge. Watching them hump that bar up, it makes me wince :(

I've seen a few people do Deadlifts at the new gym I've started going to, but all of them do the banana back yank the bar up technique.. If i tried it, I'd probably spend the next few months in a wheel chair after breaking something :o

My gym is were all the wildcats train. Some of them dudes squat so wide. Ive only seen 1 person deadlift at my gym. People looking at him while dropping the weights making the floor shake. He loved the attention. Although while i said 1 person deadlifts there is a group of lads that deadlift on the rack so the bar stops at their knees. Dont know if this is another exercise?

there was a PT at our gym teaching a big(fat) guy how to deadlift, he was explaining all about the back, feet position, shoulders etc.. the guy did the deadlift at 40kg which is perfectly fine when you're learning.

the PT took the bar added 80 kg extra and had the biggest banana back i've seen in a while, the big(fat) guy asked him why he did this without a proper form that he was just teaching him.. his reply was 'thats the way i do it'

had to literally force my self not to laugh :o

Anyone know if the Uni gym at Oxford is any good? From the pics I have seen it looks a bit small, but then I don't know how busy it gets. Happy to consider a private gym in Oxford or maybe reading (assuming I find a house there).

Ask icecold and Dom... in exchange for a price, I'm sure they can help. ;)

If so, then yeah, it's pretty small. The powerlifting bit, it's got some fantastic kit in there, a deadlift platform and all kinds of awesome people in there. But it's small, and when it's busy, be prepared to wait

And the other bit, it really doesn't have all that much equipment. So it may not be ideal if isolation work is involved heavily in your routine. I couldn't train there every day for example. But that said, the powerlifting room is fantastic and worth going for alone. If strength and compound movements are your thing, it's an awesome place to train

I think it is the same one.

Edit: It is here - Oxford University Sport on Iffley Road

Also I can't afford help. I have to move to oxford and it is expensive! :P

The weight room is pretty small yes, but if you get friendly with icecold and Dom they can shout at everyone to move out of the way for you if that helps?

However. You will make tremendous gainz if you can train there consistently.

Just being in the same room as Ice and Dom while there adds 100kg to your lifts.

Or just shout at the civilians to get the **** out tha waaayyyeeeee!

Jack, the gym is awesome. The people are awesome. It is also reasonably cheap for just the gym. The powerlifting room, where all of the bars and racks are, is small but it really isn't that much of a problem.

I would say that it is definitely the best gym in Oxford.

If you do decide to join, come say Hi :).

Seems like the replies are positive so it looks like a good option. I will only be doing compound lifts so no problem there. The wait for equipment may be a problem as I try to workout during breaks at work, but I will see how this goes.

Will defiantly say Hi Dom. I may have to hide from Ice until I fix my terrible form :P Not moving until early January so I have so time yet.

I said price. I didn't say that involved cash. ;) :D

Maybe I can bribe him with chicken fillet, I have 5-6 kg ready to go?
