*** The 2013 Gym Rats Thread ***

I did my first proper Deadlifts session yesterday with reasonable weight.

Silly question but is it normal to have quite a sore lower back the day after? My traps are incredibly sore as well.

It's normal if you don't keep the weight of your lower back, yes. :)

Also, if it's the first time, your erectors are probably asking you "what the hell did you just do?" as well...

Your traps are sore because they were holding your shoulders back. Good work. :)

Glad to hear it. I'm sure there's an element of getting used to it.

When I first started benching my chest would be so sore the day after where as now I hardly even notice it. Same with Squats although as you're aware I'm still climbing the mountain to perfect my form :D

Going back to university, it's probably now or never that I sort myself out so joined my local gym for a month (moving to Leicester in September) and did my first 5x5 session (workout A) today. Looking forward to the following sessions, and will get some videos up for form critique (as it most likely is pants!)

Well done! Keep at it! :)

Just got back from my first trip ever to a Gym :):):):)

Well that's a lie, back in February when I first got my arse into gear to sort my life out I did sign up to a 7 day trial at my local gym but I just couldn't bring myself around to going.

Forward 6 months to the day and I've lost 6 stone simply from dieting and cycling. Since my birthday a few weeks ago I've struggled getting back into the diet so yesterday I went into the gym and signed up.

With it being a 24/7 gym I planned for my first visit to be in the middle of the night. I was so very anxious about my first visit so I really wanted to be the only person in there for my first time so I could have a wander and have a go on everything to get my bearing of the place.

Midnight came and I got changed and ready and walked to the Gym, loads of people in there... damn. I couldn't bring myself to go in so instead I decided to go for a 20-30 minute brisk walk and made my way back afterwards to find people still in there. I decided to go home and try again at 1. Tried again at 1 and was the same thing, went for another walk, still there. Tried again at 2 and people still there. Really annoyed with myself at this point for being intimidated about the big muscle guys in there working out and decided to go for a run. I actually surprised myself with how far I ran considering it was my first time ever just going for a run :O

I was determined to pluck up the courage to finally go to the gym tonight and at midnight I went to have a look. 2 guys in there so i decided to go for a run. I downloaded a running app on my phone and did a 12 minute mile, which I'm happy about as I did it all in one go and it gives me a nice fitness marker for the future. Went home sweating buckets to cool off but still wanted to go to the gym. 1am came around and I headed there again, 2 other guys in there. Went for a long brisk walk this time with bits of running for 40 minutes and then had 5 minute breather on a wall near the gym. I went to check and it was empty!!!

So yeh, sorry if you read that boring story but I really glad I've been to the gym, spent 2 hours in there trying pretty much trying everything, I'm confident enough now to go at 'normal' hours :)

madtoady, watch this vid. The bit about no one even noticing you in the gym, that is you. Listen, understand, take notes :p

going on hols for a week.. pushups, pull ups, chinups etc for me no way am i relaxing :@

I go on holiday in a month. All inclusive 5*, loads of pools, great food, private beach, etc. The missus is very pleased with our choice. My first query "Does it have a gym?". Indeed it does! SCORE. All inclusive gains.

Hotel has gym...gets to hotel, checks out gym, no barbell, no rack, DB's up to 20kg, all kinds of machines :(

This was what my holiday was like this year, so didnt even bother with the gym at all.

Wow toady that's some serious issues right there.

Some weirdo looking in the Window then running away and coming back each hour is more noticeable than just another person in the gym.

No one gives a crap. Honestly. Remember even the big guys in there started somewhere.

Returned to the gym just under two weeks ago after a 5 month hiatus while I was at sea, and I'm starting to make progress again. Clothes are becoming bigger, and I'm progressing through the weights nicely with my Stronglifts 5x5. However, midset of the last set of the bench press during my last workout, I noticed something odd. For some reason, while doing my Stronglifts 5x5 routine this past week and a bit, I've been doing 3x8 for reasons that somehow escape me......D'oh!

I know. I used to do 3x8 years ago, before I knew any better, so I suppose I just subconsciously slipped back into old habits. Need to concentrate more when I train.

There's nothing wrong with 3x8, or any training regime for that matter, providing you are making progress.

Stronglift 5X5 seems to be in the spotlight at the moment and everyone is doing it because it's fashionable. Really however any workout that is focused on the big-3 compounds done properly is going to yield the same rate of progress.

Ahh rest day today - legs need to recover still from Monday, had my measurements in the gym - down to 15% BF now (5% to go then bulking time).

22% to 15% in 3 months looking at the previous printouts from the gym, a bit slow but then again I'm not perfect with my diet (going out with friends + beer).
