*** The 2013 Gym Rats Thread ***

My body really didn't like cutting down from around 86kg so I decided to move up. Despite the fact that it will take another year before my lifts are comparable to what I was getting in the 83s, I think in the long run I'll do better here. Provided that I can stay injury free...

I'm half way through readin Mark Rippetoe’s Starting Strength, (3rd Edition). I admit, it's quite heavy reading for me, but it's given me a lot of pointers on my squat. A really good book that I think all novices should read!

Hmmm not a great start to my deload & start cutting week. Macros today 2200kcals 140g fat, 210g proteinz 20g carbs. I'm just a ravenous fiend and don't have the motivation anymore lol. How the mighty have fallen.

Off to google image search shredded fitness models for motivation.............no homo.

I think it's more that people recommend SS as a good beginners routine as it covers the fundamental compound lifts and enforces steady progression in weight. But as for his form coaching, it's often out-dated or misguided. However he did teach me how to OHP correctly.

Tbf, whenever I coach squats I always focus on driving through heels and using quads for the first few sessions, let them get used to the motion and basics of a squat. Then after that, ill introduce the hip drive and conscious pulling back of the knees.

I don't think hip drive is essential when learning to squat, but definitely needs to be introduced when you're comfortable with it.

Training offshore on a big boat is a PITA.

Cannot do big compounds as the boat is moving around too much and it's freaking dangerous.

But the fun is in the boat moving in and out of swells.

Rep 1 = EASY
Rep 2 = EASY
Rep 3 = Woooah, that's a bit tough.
Rep 4 = Woooah, that's a bit tough.
Rep 5 = I'm the Hulk.
Rep 6 = I'm the Hulk.
Rep 7 = HELLLLLLPPPPPPPPPPPPP

Legs today on the Leg press will have to focus on a lower weight with more reps because of the above, will have to try some squats in the smith rack and will research how to hit Hams online :(

Standing/seated bench weights and cable work is easy enough though so it's not all terrible.

Squats like Rippetoe cru checking in. Dat hip drive brahs, so strong.

Phaggots.

Hip drive should not be coached. It may emerge naturally if someone moves a certain way, but it is a dangerous rule to coach by and frequently breaks the squat pattern.
I'm pretty sure Matt agrees that his SS book is good :)
Wrong guy bru.

I dislike almost everything Rip has written or said. That doesn't mean it isn't useful to some people though.
