*** The 2013 Gym Rats Thread ***

icecold, you've got a lot to answer for! If you never chalked your back at the meet, no one would be whinging about benches. You big trend setter you!

The bench was fine at the meet. The floor was rubbish for grip if your technique requires plenty of leg drive.

They have a material band wrapped around the bench, and it's more slippy than the bench material so I ended up throwing liquid chalk on my back to stop myself slipping.

It's a cheap chain gym, but it's better than the shoddy work one I was using.

What? So the gym has wrapped a material around the bench?

I'd be speaking to the PTIs and advising them how dangerous it is.

Been back in the gym for the past week, 4th session now and I've missed it so much /nohomo

Been off due to multiple nagging injuries, but I'm pretty damn healthy now and got my self back on stronglifts to get me back up to where I was.

Muscle memory is it real or broscience?

Hope it's real :o

Anyone who isn't part of the OcUK gym rats facebook group is seriously missing out

No they haven't. They have put there logo on a wrap around on the bench, just like every other gym in the world does. The benches are just new and need a bit of wearing in to lose the initial shiny new surface. I wore my vest and was fine with a bit of skin contact on the benches.

It's real. But what you hear in the gym is probably broscience. :)

My gym has two types of benches. One's the proper width but has slippery plastic covering, the other is nice and grippy but really narrow at the top, like head width narrow :/.

Muscle memory is it real or broscience?

It's not so much 'muscle memory' as CNS memory and actually knowing what your doing re: diet, rest & routine.

pretty much, the patterning takes a long time to go away, its literally like riding a bike (well not like that), you can go years and years but still hop on a typical pushbike and off you go right? Well you probably work out more than you ever rode bikes. So getting back down to it is very familiar, and 90% of strength is CNS and form based. Muscle mass can return quicker mainly because most people arent very big and they dont lose tons of muscle they just gain some fat. So it appears to come back quicker.

Basically if youve been big and ripped in the past you can usually get back after a short break very quickly. But the muscles themselves do not in any way 'remember' being big, its just a convenient metaphore

Went to my local gym this evening to see what's what. I knew it was a pretty hardcore gym before I went, but I've never felt so small in my life! The guys were enormous, but VERY friendly. Much better atmosphere than my local council gym and I'm sure there's plenty to learn from them. Bring on the gains :P

Very bad video of it, if anyone's interested - http://youtu.be/QhewG-6TK8g?t=1m54s The guys in the video aren't the typical clientele, from what I've seen so far anyway.

Cool!

Not gonna push it, but nice to know I'll get back to where I was previously :)

To be fair, regarding crossfit, I have no issue with the concept. It's actually quite a solid one. Variety of different exercises/routines to give you the greatest all round fitness. The problem is the 'levels' of stuff. If you built up a workout around the philosophy I can see it working fantastically, it's just not done in the best way. Being curious about it today though I did some research, and the adult gymnastics class may be interesting, and the theory is sound, even the workouts on 'crossfit.com' don't seem too bad - I haven't really looked at many in detail to be fair though.

But yeah, it's a good concept just not well practiced in many cases. But nobody can really look down on Rich Froning from a fitness/achievement perspective. (His lifts, weights, running times etc... Are all on rogue)

Anyone have any wrap ideas I can use for lunch? I literally get no time to eat when at work so eat as I am walking and wraps are easy. I take 2 usually and they are either tuna or chicken with salad & mayo, I eat a bag of mixed nuts in a week and usually take soreen and some fruit each day also.

Today for example I ate
Breakfast 6am: Bowl of porridge with 2 small scoops of flax seed and frozen mixed fruit
Around 9: 1 wrap with chicken/salad/mayo, bit of soreen and handfuls of mixed fruit/nuts
Around 12: Same as above
About 1: A banana before training
Trained around 1:30
PWO: Shake
3:30pm : Two slices of toast, tin of sardines some nuts
6:30pm: Chicken curry (I made it myself) with rice

My meal at night changes yesterday I had chicken/rice and stir fry sauce
Day before was chicken/rice/mixed veg and some cheese sauce

Never use to like hard boiled eggs but made a couple yesterday and actually don't mind them now so going to make some more tomorrow so I have something to snack on.

I walk roughly 4+ miles a day with a bag for work so burn off some calories, don't do as much cardio as I use to either.
