*** The 2013 Gym Rats Thread ***

To be fair, regarding crossfit, I have no issue with the concept. It's actually quite a solid one. Variety of different exercises/routines to give you the greatest all round fitness. The problem is the 'levels' of stuff. If you built up a workout around the philosophy I can see it working fantastically, it's just not done in the best way. Being curious about it today though I did some research, and the adult gymnastics class may be interesting, and the theory is sound, even the workouts on 'crossfit.com' don't seem too bad - I haven't really looked at many in detail to be fair though.

But yeah, it's a good concept just not well practiced in many cases. But nobody can really look down on Rich Froning from a fitness/achievement perspective. (His lifts, weights, running times etc... Are all on rogue)

Problems with crossfit:

1) Training goals: SMASH THE **** OUT OF YOUR ATHLETES!!!!111!one. That is all.

2) High rep oly stuff. Just no

3) Too many critical form compromises with high reps. Very few can perform the lifts properly/get away with not doing them properly.

4) Snap City.

Crossfit is like Apple in my opinion. It appeals to the masses, its treated with cult like adoration, and ultimately it gets the job done for its devotees. But in the end there are better areas that more educated people can exploit to, ultimately, greater reward.

O nice shout not had pita breads in a while and that would be a nice change. Shall get some when I go shopping. Have some Nandos peri peri as well already.

I like the round ones, can't remember the make but compared to Tescos own brand they last longer and taste nicer. Sure, but don't quote me on it, the macros are better too.

5) Random programming (which is related to...)

6) Wildly inconsistent quality of coaching

7) Stupidly expensive membership/training costs because it's a bit of a pyramid scheme for those at the top (major $$$ being made)

8) Claiming xyz is 'x number fittest on Earth' when nearly all the elite CrossFitters are people who've only been doing it a short while because they spent their earlier life as gymnasts/powerlifters/other stuff

9) All the workouts done for time encourage most of the first few points

10) Kipping, just the word itself is bad enough!

Our PTI's have taken a liken to crossfit (all the rage and that) and we were messing about on the pull up bar.

I was doing muscle ups, he continues to tell me I need to do some kipping to help me do more reps.

He wasn't happy when I responded that it was a waste of time, as your not using strength and your relying on momentum to carry you up. He pretty much ignored me after this, and funnily enough never attempted to do any himself :p

Re: pittas - "The Food Doctor" pittas are brilliant. Seeds, high protein, hand made, good quality flours.

Re: Crossfit - done properly, it's good. Problem is most places don't do it properly.

Interesting situation (at least to me today):

Was very comfortably doing my squats, light only 70kg, and on my penultimate set for which I'm currently going for 'one left in the tank', I felt a slight twinge on my left quad. I stretched on and marched into my final set which didn't feel quite right so I went a bit lighter on reps fearing causing an injury.

It felt ok and I began to massage the hell out of it, until it hurts style. Finished up with a lot of rolling about until I decided 'you know, this isn't feeling great'. Today I can barely put much weight on it  :D

Think I actually made it worse by messing about before I could give it a chance to recovery by itself. Also, I guess the entire area is going to be bruised as hell after I attacked it. Derp!

So, worth holding off on massaging / rolling until you can properly assess the extent of the injury? Also, spec me a range of exercises sans squats and dead lift for my inevitable recovery / non- leg sessions :D

These two combined were pretty much my point.

It's a solid concept. Just most places have the issues that have been described above more often than not...

Thinking of switching gyms. Opinions on LA Fitness (Corporate discount and it's local to my work and my home).

So they even have a proper squat rack as I am currently working with a Smith's machine for squats and EZ bar for deadlifts.....

Isn't that the case for any gym though? The vast majority are full of people who don't have a clue what they are doing or why :p

Those are the ones I was thinking of.

Cheap as chips too, 99p for 6 IIRC.
