*** The 2014 Gym Rats Thread ***

I've ordered a pair of resistance bands from MyProtein (23-54kg), don't suppose anyone can point me towards some guides on how I can use them?

I've seen them used a lot in videos for benching, squating and deadlifting, which is what i'd planned to use them for mainly, but a guide on how to set them up, and other uses would be pretty good.

Do you mean for mobility?

If so MWOD and the mobility thread.

Was going to post in the beginners thread but it's not been updated in a while. Know nothing about this kind of stuff so go easy.

Basically I'm about 5'5" and weigh between 9.3 - 9.6. Couple of weeks ago weighed 8'13" so doing okay with the weight gain I think. Wanting to look a little better, get healthier. What kind of diet would you recommend and work routine? Bought a 50kg barbell and dumbell set as can't really afford the gym at the minute. Watched a few videos and done some curls, squats and other things for practice. Although I'm guessing I should probably gain more weight before beginning a regime?

Currently eating eggs, chicken, nuts & fruit .. rice. Pretty much everyday. I struggle with the diet thing as a lot of food I've yet to try. Up until a few weeks ago I'd never tried rice or salmon. So getting into the fitness thing is motivating me to try new things. That's big for me. :o

Not sure what my question is. Just want to know where to start. Any good plain foods to try? Do I need to supplement? I've noticed with the bar I can do lots of one exercise (15+) and only a few of another (under 10). I take it I should be aiming for 6-8 reps of each exercise?

Btw, that video is incredibly impressive FreeFaller. You look cool as ****.

Read the beginners' guide. :)

Routine? Stronglifts. Might be interesting with your gym kit, but there MUST be a PureGym close to you...?

Diet? You weigh not very much, so just concentrate on eating everything: nuts, fish, meat, green veg... It's all good. :)

Don't fancy going to the gym. I'm tiny! I'd be totally lost in their without some guidance.

Thanks for the advice. :)

Don't worry - everybody starts somewhere. :)

And getting hooooj is not something that happens overnight or even in six months: it takes a progressive workout regime that two bits of kit don't necessarily provide... And a lot of food. ;)

Just remember it's not where you start it's where you finish.

And most big guys started off as little guys so you've as much right to be there than everybody else. Overcome your self consciousness and go for it, you'll feel at home after 3 or 4 sessions.

You're more likely to be given some guidance when going to a gym.

Working out on your own, unless you video yourself you may never be told if you're doing something wrong.

I actually found most of the big guys (not roid heads) friendly and helpful when I used to go. I've always found people who exercise to generally be happier, more friendly and more chilled out.

Pray tell how you knew the friendly big guys were not on cycle? Steroids do not make you a ****** being a ****** does.

I was just about the post this. Roid rage seems to be a myth anyway, and I've seen plenty of small guys who are loud and obnoxious in the gym.

I've been to one gym (that grotty stank one) where a fair amount of the people there were on cycle (and openly stated as such) and it wasn't obvious, except for one guy who had some SERIOUS backney.

It's just another myth perpetuated by the media and generally ill informed general public who feel that going out every weekend and drinking till they black out while stuffing various substances up their noses and down there throats is fine but at the very mention of steroids they are heavenly beings and anyone on cycle is a dirty, cheating, rage filled murderer.

The amount of anger I've been on the wrong end of due to drink and reccy drugs is crazy yet both of those things are almost viewed as "just one of those things that happens on a night out" by a large amount of the general population.

I don't think that's because of roids, but because of idiots being idiots. I know people who would get roid rage if you gave them sugar pills and told them they were steroids.

3 weeks into Stronglifts and while the weight is still light and easy to manage, I understand why you're supposed to start with the bar. Getting some aches I was not expecting this early on.

...and steroids are just one of those things that people do at the gym that seems to make some guys think they can do anything. It might be different where you live but most people on the gear where I live are jumped up *****s. The very reason most of them are on it is because they're self concious and want to be bigger than everyone.
