*** The 2014 Gym Rats Thread ***

Steedie does his BOR's in the rack. Then applies more lip gloss :p

I think the logic behind doing them in a rack is not having to heave the weight from the floor and to use that energy in the reps that count.

I can see & understand the logic but not sure if I agree with it. (Please don't misinterpret as being argumentative, it's just not something I've devoted any time to forming an opinion on!)

I can see the thinking behind it in the same way I use the rack for my OHPing, then again I'm a short arse so the bar doesn't really need to move that far off the floor for my BORs :D.

Not exactly the right thread from this and it's bordering on medical advice but...

I've torn my meniscus, an MRI confirms and I will be having surgery within the next 12 weeks (likely 6). Obviously anything weight bearing is out of the question, how can I not turn into more of a pudding during this time? (There will be a further 12 weeks rehabilitation afterwards) Will be out of the gym likely for 6 months.

I'm considered starting swimming a few times a week, will this be RIP gainz?

Has anyone else had this surgery done?

I think I borked my right hammy last weekend doing squats, I went too heavy too quickly. What's the best course of action to reduce soreness etc?

Movement (not loaded) through full ROM, compression, ice and ibuprofen will reduce soreness. Ibuprofen works on prostaglandins (swelling agents, but this then slows healing slightly), ice induces vasoconstriction (and then reperfusion via Hunting's reaction which KStar wrote a - unusually for him - poorly referenced article on that got the whole Crossfit community up in arms against cryotherapy).

Done right, all will reduce pain. The last three will reduce inflammation and soreness.

Done wrong, ice will damage the tissues you are trying to fix, and ibuprofen will mask the pain, leading you to over-exert and further delay proper healing.

From a size perspective, yes. Nothing stopping you going beach-crazy, mind. You don't need your knee for bench, back and bis, do you? ;)

Never had the surgery, mind.

Unfortunately our gym has lots of people from work that go throughout the day. I'm signed off on full pay and don't really wan't to risk it.

I've got some dumbbells at home so can do a bit of upper body work fortunately.

When cutting do you's switch up your routine?

My thoughts are, If I find a routine that incorporates cardio into weight training I maintain any muscle I have while stripping away fat?

Or am I better off continuing to lift, then add cardio at the end of a workout?

Just curious as to what people do.

Fat loss is an output of calorie deficit and hormone balance, so provided you are eating sufficient protein and still stimulating those muscles, you're good.

So, keep the lifting workout, and eat less whilst maintaining brotein. :)

This ^

Cardio is just a means to an end - calorie deficit. If you want to eat a sufficient amount but still lose add cardio. If you're happy eating less then adjust your intake so that it puts you in a deficit.

Either way taper in, don't just cut out a load of calories and start a stupid amount of cardio overnight.

Nothing wrong with BOR'ing a rack, I'd never use it if someone wanted to squat but if it's empty then I don't see what the issue is

Too many of you phaggots worrying too much about the "Macho" gym code and not doing enough lifting
