Hook grip? Ouch, no way man, no way. You shouldn't need anything other than standard grip for a long time. I can do 125kgx5 with standard grip and I have little lady hands and pathetic wrists. Just use liquid chalk like Somnambulist said, your grip will get stronger as your deadlift goes up.
Nothing more painful about hook grip than how hands feel after deadlifting for the first time. It takes a couple of weeks and then it's easy.
cluck cluck cluck

I try hook grip from time to time, but still not used to it. I do it when I'm doing single arm deadlifts - but that's just a bit of showing off
I'd prefer not to use mixed grip, but I have no choice whilst I can double over hand ~210, it's only for singles, any more and my grip starts to fade. I'd rather not use straps, though I do find I can concentrate more on the lift when I do.
Hook grip is the best answer to all the problems - shame it hurts

Eh just use straps - strongmen use them all the time. I do like the hook grip and have spent some time playing about with it, but it isn't the be all and end all.
Might want to check out Clarence Kennedy...
A big bear like you should have no problem.
