Incorporating weight into pull ups?

Tom_e's right, if you can do 3 * 20 rep sets and your still good to go then yeah.
But I regularly do pull ups, almost every workout, and I wouldn't say I'm ready for weights!

EDIT: Also pull ups are a heavily form focused exercise, making sure your bodies straight and fully extending your arms, engaging on the negative. There's lots to iron out before you start adding weight imo

Does anyone use Clenbuterol for fat burning at the gym?

Anyone any thoughts? Is it any good? Worthwhile for an amateur gym rat looking to cut fat through a mixture of weights, cardio and then boxfit type sessions?

Thanks all for the pull up advice. There's plenty of work to do before I hit 20 but it felt good to hit a set of 7 when I couldn't do 1 2-3 months ago.

Haven't posted in this thread in a while, been going through the usual i wanna train but no energy etc etc.

So here it is, i think i've reached that point due to working graveyard shift i just can't train consistently anymore, i've tried training after work and workouts are a bit meh, and before work they are beast mode so to speak, but man my recovery times suck ass!

Anyone else on a graveyard shift that can offer me some advice, i do eat very well and my sleep pattern is very regular, it only changes when i cycle a weekend off, but only by 2 hours so nothing major.

After 11-12 hour working days the only way I can get through a decent workout is with some preworkout. I then take nutriblasts to work that have loads of fruit, creatine, protein and nuts in to give me a boost inbetween breakfast, lunch and dinner.

You don't need to wait until you can do 20 reps, you wouldn't wait until you could do 3 x 20 on your bench press weight before you increased it would you? Pull ups are no different. Once you're hitting your reps x sets for whatever purpose you're training for, then its time to increase the weight e.g. if you're managing 3 x 8, 5 x 5 etc.

I was just throwing the 3 * 20 out there as an example of finding it easy.
I hadn't looked into what sets you were doing.

I was just taking the view of comparing your body to an empty bar.
Make sure you're solid on your form with the empty bar before adding weight.

No, no, no, no, no.

I'd always say roids would be safer and give you more of a benefit in fat loss and strength gain at the same time. Things like clen are for your professionals. Ain't no average guy taking clen and benefitting from it.

Giraffe, if you can do 3x8 pull ups, then stick a 2kg dumbbell between your knees. If you can do that, progress to a 4kg dumbbell etc.

It's the same as any other weight progression in lifting.

You skip squats on a 5*5 routine when deadlifts feature because they're too heavy, and you want to go for a 4/week intense squat program?

Brave, or some would say "foolish!" :D

I like that.

If you are going to attempt Smolov anything for legs, be prepared to eat even more and sleep twice as long.

Smolov is indeed fun but having tried it, I'm not sure it is worth it for those who aren't pretty legendary already. If you want a change, I am really enjoying the routine Dreamforger posted in my log - varying sets and reps each week to keep it interesting

Smolov is fun/insane. It took my squat from either 210 or 220 to 255 but after I finished it I plateaued very hard.

It makes sense, there was no way I could continue with that level of training so I backed off a lot of the volume and subsequently lost my gains.

Smolov is not something I'd recommend unless you've got;

  • a reallly dialed in squat form
  • a deathwish
  • a serious desire to squat more to the detriment of everything else in your life
  • extreme recovery options carefully planned out
It is a program that demands serious alterations to your daily life and I can safely say it's the toughest program I've ever encountered.
