Cesc got way more assists for Arsenal because we based our entire system around him. Barcelona don't really base it on any one player, but if they do bias it towards anyone, it's Messi, not Xavi or Iniesta.
I think Fabregas is a brilliant player, but to say he's better than Xavi/Iniesta because he got more assists last year is like saying Manuel Almunia is a better player than Messi because he made more saves last season.
I didn't say that, Xavi has, in his best season probably around 40% more assists than Fabregas has ever achieved in one season. Xavi isn't and hasn't been as good as that season for 3 years, he also scored more goals, and yes, the team is based around Xavi more than any other player in the team. Also Xavi's passes have had in recent seasons, Eto'o, Ibra, villa, Pedro, Messi, Iniesta, finishing off chances he's made, for Arsenal Fabregas has had..... RVP, sure, but also Chamakh, Nasri, Theo, Rosicky, Eboue, Bendtner, Diaby, to finish off the chances he makes.
Most importantly ahead of assists and goals is that Fabregas has created more chances than anyone else in Europe, I think every single season for 4-5 years. But for better quality players around him, and even RVP who I think is great, misses a load of chances, Fabregas would simply have gotten a crapload more assists, which would only have appeared to further the gap between them.
Fabregas also, rather quietly and with little credit, does an incredibly amount of defensive work for Arsenal, spending many many games(far less last season with Wilshire behind him) dropping to be the deepest central midfielder in the past 3-4 seasons, probably more so than Xavi has to, and his work rate is insane, he gets back and forward constantly and for a guy who isn't very fast, strong or tall he wins far more tackles, dribbles past and holds off more people than most his size would.
Assists/scoring is merely one measure of why he's better, not the REASON he's better. He gets more assists and goals because he's a better player, his movement is outstanding and rarely recognised at Arsenal. Think about it, he's basically being played in Villa's normal role at the moment, and watching the game, he does exactly as Villa/Messi does, runs in behind brilliantly, great time runs, hiding behind defenders and running in behind them, drifting away from markers, making runs all games waiting for passes. These are things he basically never even got to show for Arsenal but has always been capable of, being basically an out and out striker is something he never, ever did at Arsenal yet he's been superb, world class in a position he hasn't even played for the past 8 years at Arsenal....... thats just how good and versatile he is.
A couple of his goals have been simply superb control and strikes, others are ends of great moves where he gets a poachers goal like Villa would get merely because his great movement see's him in the right place. In the past 4-5 games he's looked every bit like Villa at his very best...... how many central midfielders can move so easily into such a role and look so god damned good, without playing the position for over 8 years, while also having been world class as a central midfielder, while getting the assists to win both the world and Euro cups.
As for Rooney's passing, as I said, I was repeating what lots of Utd fans were saying throughout the Bolton game, of whom several were saying how utterly crap he'd been before he scored, as per usual scoring goals makes people forget about the overall performance. LIkewise a great pass, of which he made several doesn't wipe all the poor passes out of existance.
Ronaldo and Messi are simply so far ahead of Rooney in all aspects of their game, Rooney is turning into a great goal scorer, but has only had one "prolific" season. Ronaldo's pass for the 3rd(iirc) goal at the weekend was perfect, as were many many of his passes that game, Messi is the same, though was actually quite poor this particular weekend.
