The Acer ONE Thread

If I ever get round to buying a mini laptop it will be this one, I don't think it makes sense (for me anyway) to spend £320+ on something that's just for browsing the web and the occasional bit of movie playback. This comes in around the tempting EEE 701 price but without the major drawback of the tiny keyboard and screen.

I honestly don't mind Linux/512mb ram/3 cell battery/262K colour screen/20GB storage, and there's always the option to upgrade ram/storage/battery at a later point.

There's no way these will sell for £199 when they first come out. Retailers will jack up the prices until there is a large supply.

Does anyone rechon this could be used as a download machine ? Could just attach external hard drives.

I dont know much about the Linux OS on the eee, but whats on this ? Could ubuntu go on it ? Just thinking of the applications that can be installed.

All you'd need would be http://deluge-torrent.org/ with the web interface and some big hdd.

The usual high street stores usually charge the RRP regardless of demand for this type of thing, you usually see the higher prices with specialist web based retailers.

going to wait till then got them in a competitor lol go have a look and see what i think then spend the money but i have to say i really want one

so what you guys planning on getting the linux or windows one and what you going to run on it?

part of me is thinking i will get the linux one for the ssd and stick a nice big sd in it, and will give linux a go but will prob end up with xp on it dont know

but not 100% as the 80gb hard drive be nice and still stick and sd in there just dont know as xp on hard drive will take long to boot tbh

so i dont know just yet

The XP version is £299 vs. £199 for the linux version according to that video. If so I'll get the Linux and transfer my XP license over (retail version) and swap the 2gb ram and 16GB SDHC I got for my Eee 701 over.

Linux one, stick XP on it with a couple of SD cards (it's got two card readers). Can get 8gb cards for £15 each.

While the 80Gb HD would be nice it's going to mean lower battery life, probably a little slower and it'll be less durable... not really worth £100 for XP out of the box.

Do we know when this is coming out?

I'll actually walk into a shop and buy one for £200, but the longer it takes to come out, the more umm-ing and ah-ing will go on as there will be more choice and similar prices around.

If I could get one tomorrow, I would, TBH.

i head it will be out and about for around the 10th in the uk and end of the month for the u.s :D

Shame the 20GB SSD mentioned a few weeks ago now seems to be 8 GB, that's quite a lot more limited, but I guess there's always SD cards. Think I'll go with the Linux one, and if I don't get on with Linux (never used it) I'll put XP on and buy another 512mb ram. Plus I'll get an 8 or 16 GB SD card. Should still be less than £240 (I've already got XP).
