The Acer ONE Thread

twice as much memory, over twice as much storage, bluetooth, monstrous battery life, multi touch pad and it even has a bag :p (also has two internal mpci slots and a 1.8" zif connector). Sounds better to me?
£120 better though? Also there will be a better specced ONE (can't remember the exact specs) for £300.

I've seen the One on pre-order at £260 with an 80gb HD and 1gb memory. So cheaper still and 4x the storage.

the 901 has an SSD, the "better" one has a hard drive, it's still a no brainer (and the 80gb One is £299).

I think so, with atleast 2x the battery life, 2x memory, 12gb more ssd storage, bluetooth and a far better touch pad it's well worth it.

Think of it this way - for the same price as the EEE 701, the Acer give you a bigger high res screen, bigger more useable keyboard, atom, more storage... and without going up to real laptop prices. Also the EEE 901 still has the tiny keyboard.

I can't personally see the point of the £300 Acer since if you're gonna spend that much just spend the extra for the Wind or 901 (I personally would much rather have a Wind than the 901), but if £300+ is just too much to spend on something you're not even sure you'll use much, then the £200 Acer comes into it's own.

So... any official release date yet?

I notice it's up for pre-order at a couple of competitors, yet they're being naughty and charging the Acer RRP plus tax, when the RRP is supposed to include it.

I know, I know, supply and demand, it's desirable, people want it etc.

But a MASSIVE factor towards it's desirability is the sub-£200 price, so adding money on takes away that benefit.

Yeah, think the same as you !, I really want one on release !, but the places Ive seen it so far are wanted around 230/240 or so, just pushes it over the top.

Oh and I think the release is meant to be the 11th...

I have been following these sort of systems from the start. The ASUS EEE 701 was very tempting but it was obvious there would be a 2nd generation and beyond, I am glad I held back to see the results.

The Acer Aspire One is the one I have been waiting for. Acer have been very clever. Saw the first generation Asus eee's (701's) and waited for the 2nd gen to come along (901's) saw the improvements customers wanted (1280 x 600 native res 8.9" screen, wider touchpad and the much awaited Intel Atom 1.6GHz processor) and built one for the market that tailored for all needs below the £300 (I would guess that at release that will hit the £340 mark). If Acer keeps the £199 -> £ 299 figure, I would be very suprised. I am thinking plus £30 ~ £40 for general review site figures around at the minute, but we will have to wait and see.

Spec Lineup:

* Linux, 3 cell battery, 512MB RAM, 8 GB SSD
* Linux, 6 cell battery, 512MB RAM, 80 GB hard drive
* Linux, 6-cell battery, 1GB RAM, 80 GB hard drive
* Windows XP Home, 6-cell battery, 512MB RAM, 80 GB hard drive
* Windows XP Home, 6-cell battery, 1GB RAM, 80 GB hard drive

I, like many others I expect, will opt for the cheapest option, not because I am cheap, but in awe of SSD technology, especially in laptops, what with the obvious non-mechanical benifits (longer life, durability, lower power draw, etc) and the fact that you have a fully working system for around the £200 mark that all but fits in your jacket pocket.

A couple of questions:

1) Will the 8GB SSD be in the form of a PCI-E card or soldered to the motherboard?
2) Is the cooling active or passive?

Interesting. Well I am sure the manufacturers will improve this as newer technology demands it.

I suppose it makes sense for this to be the case when the SSD is in use. But when idle a SSD does nothing, a HDD will be spinning a platter or few which would surley draw more power then a idle SSD. I am not basing this statement on fact, just a guess.

That factor aside though. 3 cell or 6 cell, very good battery life on the Acer Aspire One's.

Any ideas with regards the state of the SSD, motherboard or PCI-E card?

Is the ram soldered on all models? if so thats a bit a draw back not being able to stick a cheap 2GB stick in.

Hmm, this is interesting. I am sure I saw a video showing a RAM upgrade panel on the back.

Looks like they have done an Asus 701 4G here. Solder the specified RAM on the motherboard, and provide a DDR2 So-dimm Slot for upgradeability, Same goes for the SSD from the sounds of it, but I would assume no PCI-E slot for good SSD upgradability. Still an SSD slot designed for more space, I am sure it could boot off this. I hope there is an onboard RAM and SSD, on / off option in the systems BIOS.

Thanks benjo plz. for the info. Do you have a link to that info, this will hopefully give us an insight as to whether or not there is a RAM slot onboard.
