The Acer ONE Thread

Nothing really sexy I am afraid.

The BIOS EC has been updated, which may be related to the BIOS crash. The tradeoff is that the panel brightness table has been changed to 46%, 47%, 48%, 49%, 50%, 63%, 72%, 81%, 90%, 100% to fix another issue, basically removing the four lowest settings. The BIOS bug with lowercase password characters has been fixed. Also mentioned is a fixed reclaim hang up issue, which is probably WLAN related.

yer put me off for a bit but then put me off all together if there getting to the point of a netbook with dual core cpu lots of ram big hdd's is it worth getting a netbook y not just get a 12-13" laptop

i am really looking at just sticking with my macbook pro for now and might get a netbook when they are really cheap like under £100 as something to run linux on and mess about with

So is the Apsire one worth getting? I'm thinking of driving down to my local shop and treating myself as I've been eyeing up an eeepc for ages, but this looks like it ticks all the boxes and is reasonably priced too.

I'm thinking of getting the basic model. Is the RAM upgradable with that one and how does the atom cpu perform under ubuntu? I've heard the Atom isn't the best CPU out there and worse than the eeepc celerons.

Thanks.

Just reserved one and I'm picking it up in an hour! I'm only using linux so I hope the 512mb won't be a problem.

Can anyone give me some links about how to get the best out if this unit?

pcAnywhere I would try media player classic on it, i'm running everything perfectly on that, even some 720p videos. To anyone thinking of buying one, yes they are definately worth the money, although I would opt for the 1gb/12ogb HDD model rather than 512mb if you are going to use windows, i'm running vista on 1gb and it's surprisingly smooth and runs aero really nicely. You can put upto 1.5gb in these things but as has been said it's a very very fiddly job which means pulling it to bits and taking the motherboard out first.
Edit: I just noticed you're using linux, not a clue then sorry mate, maybe someone else will know.

Well I got the Aspire. There was a 120gb version in the shop but it wasn't in stock so I got the 8gb one instead. I haven't opened it yet as I'm now in a quandry whether to take it back and plump for the 120gb model instead.

I'm not using xp, only linux and I'm only really using it to surf the web etc. I reasoning with myself that I won't need the space so I might as well keep this one, but I'm not sure.

What do you think?

if your not using it for anything else id say speed over space.

I will be using it to watch films etc but the 5/6 gig spare is enough even for me for that before i can say connect back to my home network and change them around etc.

If you do decide to use windows warren you will find the 8gb one very slow with lots of freezing, reason being that writing to the ssd is very poor. I would say take it back and get the HDD model, you will probably end up putting films etc on it sooner or later and appreciate the extra space anyway.

VLC - I think that's the best bet. Thanks

re: HDD vs SSD

The SSD also has a longer battery life, and will be cooler on your lap! But I like the ability to store films, mp3s and photos on one machine.

Oh - and I can surf from it too :-)

Only addition I'm using is a small, cordless mouse as I hate *all* trackpads..

Oops, I only just realized ultraportables don't have optical drives. And it seems like it's £50 for a slimline external one. :/
