The Air Rifles & Pistols thread

JSR on ebay seem to have them for a decent price 50 for £20, which would probably be a lifetime supply for me. Umarex ones as well, which have silicone oil added to keep the internal seals lubed.

Is it possible to buy the Umarex Co2 guns in the glossy finish any more or are they all matt black now? I want to get a S&W revolver, but can only find the matt black version. If not i'll go for the silver version.

Anyone could recommend an Airsoft/bb shotgun-like? My Mrs has started shooting a while back with a 20 bore, but I think we could use something non-lethal that is roughly the right shape/weight and still shoot stuff -- for practice/training purpose mostly.

I've found "A&K Full Metal M870 Pump Action Shotgun (Wood)" for around a 100 quid, that's the closest I've seen to a 'shotgun' in that sort of things.

Personally, I'd prefer something more air/pellet based, but I didn't find anything really close to what i'm looking for.

From what I've been able to glean they are pretty much all based on the 870, which can also fire paintballs though it's not meant to, I've seen them online from abroad for seventy odd quid, thinking of getting one myself.

I'm buying an Umarex Colt saa .177 pellet as soon as my rfd gets them in later this month and I'm buying the airsoft calibre of the same gun from Taiwan, from what I've seen they have a good tight action, the best untill you go cnc aluminium or steel which is high hundreds to thousands of quid for an airsoft pistol.

Thanks I just bought 50 from their website rather than Ebay. 50p more, but next day delivery.

I bought one of these to use with my Co2 guns and wish I hadn't bothered. I haven't tried it yet but it seems like a pile of crap just by looking at it. Tiny little springs that will snap in no time. It's not magnetic as claimed in the listing, the targets supposedly stay up on little metal ledges, but the tolerances are so poor there little chance of that actually working.

Tempted to ask for a refund, but not sure its even worth bothering with the delivery cost through royal mail as its pretty heavy. I could just use it as a sort of spinner target if it doesn't work. I know it was only £20, but i expected a lot better than this for that price.

Are there any targets like this that are any good? I have seen the SMK black targets, but the animal targets look massive, so they wouldn't be much of a challenge. Plus the quality of those didn't look great either.

Why not try it by poking/flicking the circular targets?
The running boar one we have at the club is flimsy and the paddles wobble around like nobody's business but they work fine and have been shot to hell and back.
Admittedly the boar are knock down rather than knock up.

Thanks, I had a play with it yesterday and it is as rubbish as I suspected. It works fine when you flick the targets, but when you shoot them the first one stays up as it should, but as soon as you hit another the first resets. The tolerances are just way too slack for it to work well.

Plus the pellets seem to stick to the metal targets. I had to cut them off with a knife lol.

I'll have a play with it to see if there's anything I can do. If not i'll look into the boar one you mentioned. i think i did see that on ebay, along with a duck and zombie version. The only thing that put me off those was that the targets are a bit large for the range i'll be using it at.

Had a try at stippling with my Dremel today. Pretty pleased with the result for a first attempt. I think i do prefer the other way of doing it with a nail, making very small dents. This is just an old stock I made years ago, but i am going to have a go at making a stock for my HW97 using black pepper laminate so want to find a good way of doing the grip. i'd love to chequer it, but the tools are hard to find and cost a fortune.

Thanks :). It didn't actually take that long, probably 1 1/2 hours all in. The outline is the hardest part, it would be very easy to slip with the knife and ruin it so had to go slowly.

Bought this today, albeit not brand new but at a price I couldn't sniff at and with the saving I've made i can do the work i want to it and still have change left over against if I had bought it new.

Bought the below as a package:

AirArms S410 .22 Pre-Anti Tamper
Nikko Sterling Mount Master 3-9x40 AO

Had a go at adding delrin buttons to my Cometa 300 piston. Bought a 6mm cobalt steel Dewalt extreme drill bit and used it in my pillar drill. The metal was ridiculously hard and it only just did the job. Had to keep cooling the piston down so the metal didnt soften as the trigger engages the piston body.

Pressed some slightly oversized delrin rod into the holes and then glued it in with some epoxy glue.

I dont have a lathe so drilled a hole in some plywood for the front of the piston and used the steel spring guide in my pillar drill to spin the piston then used a block of steel with 400g emery paper to sand the buttons down until they were a tight fit.

Not got the rifle back together yet but it seems to be nice and smooth in the chamber.

A very neat looking job... having the right sort of equipment, such as a pillar drill for example, certainly helps!

I hope it all goes back together OK for you, and we will look forward to a further update in due course. :)

Picked up a SIG Sauer MCX today.

Completely unplanned impulse buy from my normal gun shop, I was picking a loaner shotgun to try, and he had just received 10 of these. He mentioned 'oh guys have you seen these toys around' and the gun was passed around to the 2 other guys in the shop with me (which I didn't know!) and we ALL decided to pick one!

First magazine looks like a lot of fun. Standing around and pointing sort of gun, 30 bits magazine. Makes a 'clunk' noise instead of a lound airgun noise. Like it so far. I think I need to tune the sights, but it looks like a very good plinker!

Thanks Montala, i'll report back with the results once its together. Yeah it would have been impossible without the pillar drill. I might even invest in a metal cutting lathe and some other bits and bobs as I enjoy messing about with metal, plus I'm sure it would double as a wood lathe as well.

BusError, awesome! Do want. I was going to hold out for the pcp version, but I read on one of the airgun forums that they werent going to make one now as there is nowhere to hide the bottle. So might have to get one of these soon.

More ghetto tuning for anyone interested. Decided to try and remove the twang from my Cometa with a tighter fitting guide. There was about 1mm of play in the original steel guide, so I bought a rod of brass from ebay, sanded it in my pillar drill till a tight fit was achieved, then fixed that to the original base by making a stepdown and then peening the excess over.

Pleased with the results and it only cost about £3!

Just ordered a new gun from Germany. A hw95 with a HW98 stock. So will need to get hold of a 12ft/lb spring. Although it has been fun messing about with my Cometa I think I'll just buy a dropin tuning kit for the new gun. Can anyone recommend a good one? I'd ask on the BBS, but they are a bit biased.

Interesting.
Everyone seems to use delrin now. but if it works it's great.

If you order from abroad, they can normally supply the spring with the gun for very little extra in the scheme of things.
I got a Tinbum Tuning guide for my HW99. Not tried any others of course so my opinion is, hey it works fine.

Bought this one from here. I have used them in the past and they were excellent. Shame the exchange rate isn't as good at the moment, but you cant get this hybrid combo in the UK and its what my brother wanted.

They sell the 16j spring for most of the HW guns, but not the HW95 strangely. So may as well get a kit and get rid of the twang at the same time.

Yeah I think a lot use delrin as its cheap and easy to machine a 1 piece mount from. Brass is more costly and harder to machine, but is apparently a good material to use as its hard wearing and self lubricating. I was going to use delrin, but couldn't work out how to attach it to the steel base. I have made a delrin washer to go behind the spring though, so the spring is floating between low friction delrin.

It has removed the twang and if anything I think I might need to just sand a bit more off as the power has dropped slightly. So it must be a little bit tight on the spring.

Bought a cheap scope for the Sig. x2-6. Didn't want something stupidly powerful, and this works pretty well actually. It was very easy to zero too. <30 quid -- hard to beat!

My air rifle has a slow leak so i've ordered a full set fo o rings and a few spare parts, valve pin, valve spring, hammer spring. Going to disassemble it at the weekend and replace the 0 rings and valve pin and polish a few parts.

Never taken a PCP apart but think i should be ok thanks to some YouTube guides. Hopefully i don't make it worse!
