The Air Rifles & Pistols thread

:D

Fine out in the field, but not for many people's gardens!

Having said that, we're very rural, and we've started to get overrun with rabbits. There are loads round here and they've started invading our back garden - I've had 6 kits in the last two weeks  My neighbour's Harris hawk is very grateful for them :D

Are you on the AGBBS? Do you have any other guns? Your HW100 looks nice - what cal do you prefer? :)

Been hunting for years :-)

My rifles are

BSA untra muti shot .177
W97k .22 ( love this springer)
Hk100k .177 ( the best pcp rifle I've ever owned )

Don't use AGBBS as its full of idiots but I do use http://www.airgunforum.co.uk

.177 great at range ( I shoot rabbits between 35yds to 50yds)
.22 i only shoot at maxium range of 35yds because I am poor at hold over and under ;-)

At last somebody who knows the limitations of his guns !!

This is what a hw100 can do in skilled hands

Love the bottle hole shooting at 80yds

That looks like fun :D.

I want one of these. Korean ripoff of the rapid 7. They are supposed to be really good though.

I think I'd much rather pay the extra and put money into a British company, rather than some Korean copycats. Also, is that drop off due to the gun not being regulated? Doesn't seem that great.

Also I wouldn't want a rifle that's called a rainstorm or windy city :p

Would anyone be willing to lend me a chrono? I'd pay for postage both ways and give you a fiver as a thank you. I just want to make sure my guns are legal before using them again as I put in a tuning kit in my Lightening and have never tested the output.

Failing that I'll probably buy one of these http://airgunbuyer.com/details.asp?cat=Chronographs&SubCat=Shooting%20Chrony%20Chronographs&Product=3047, but it seems a waste when I'll probably only use it once. Plus it always seems to be out of stock.

That pretty much puts plinking in my back garden illegal, damn

not quite : It is an offence to discharge a firearm within fifty feet of the centre of a highway, if doing so would cause a nuisance or endangering the public
So long as you're safe and considerate, plinking in your back garden is fine. If you know your neighbours, invite them round to have a go - chances are most blokes will jump at the chance. Also they see that 'the man with a gun' is only 'next door with an air rifle'.

Telephone directories in a shoebox make a superb pellet catcher - they can take a 12ftlb air rifle at point blank and stop the pellet.
Indeed they do :p we used to shoot at extra strong mints using a cardboard box lined with phone books as a back stop.

Same, the BBs was just full of *****, some of them quite long-standing members too. Too much of a clique over there (GD here is tame by comparison).

Combro chronographs are ok - I use one. One thing to note, if you're using it on a recoiling rifle, make sure the damn thing is attached to the end of the barrel securely. 2 reasons - 1) whilst combro will send you any replacement parts, should you happen to shoot the hell out of their fine product, it's a pain in the arse. 2) should the chrono move during firing, you are likely to get false readings.

I'd also recommend the following bits of software:

Nice guns :)

I use an s410 and a HPA Umarex 850 in .22 and an S200 in .177 for my hunting. I also have a few other rifles and pistols for plinking. I keep my ranges similar to yours, although I find my rangefinder can really help with my hold over :)

I've recently acquired a Falcon FN Raptor, but am struggling to get it to group better than an inch at 30 yards :/

I have a Shooting Chrony F1 that you are more than welcome to borrow, but it is quite big - it weighs just over a kilo and the value is ~ £100 so it's a tenner each way from Royal Mail (unless you can find a cheaper alternative?) - half the price of a combro
Let me know :)

Quink - How do you find the HPA 850?

I bought the Co2 version for my granddad so he could keep the rat population from attacking his bird aviary (his house backs onto a canal). His muscle weakness prevented me from getting him either a Springer or a PCP (dive bottle too heavy) which meant Co2 only and the 850 was, at the time, the best stock Co2 rifle available.

- Like most of your weapons related posts asking about "Best" weapons there is no "Best", just what's "best" for your particular set of needs, i.e for Rabbit/Pigeon culling my AirWolf MCT was "best" for me but others would pick different rifles and they'd be "best" for that individual too.

Thanks for the offer, I wouldn't want to risk it getting damaged in the post with it being big and heavy. I was hoping someone would have one of the smaller cb-625, as that wouldn't cost much to send.

I think I may as well just buy one as it will be useful to have and I can keep an eye on the fps to make sure it doesn't creep up as it beds in.

jumpy, I didn't realise they had a website, It seems to be out of stock everywhere for some reason. I'll get one ordered, thanks.

arekgreenman888 - this one - I saw one at the Newark Shooting Show earlier this year - it looks stunning!

ianh - I found the 850 ok on CO2, but it had a really pronounced power curve - especially toward the end of the CO2 canister, plus temperature and rapid shooting also affected the power output. I like the action though (but not the auto safety - I've also changed that so it's a manual one now), so took the plunge and HPA'd it myself using an adaptor and regulated bottle that you can buy for less than £100 - it totally transforms the gun. It is certainly as accurate at normal ranges as the S410, plus it's a synthetic stock, so I don't worry when it gets marked. I had to adapt/cut the stock to get it to fit. The conversion does make it a bit front end heavy, but it's such a light stock, it's not a problem. It looks a bit like a Rapid :D I find myself taking it out more than I do my S410 :)

/edit - Mark A - no worries - get a Combro 625 if you can find one in stock - they are very popular - it's always good to keep a check on your guns anyway! I went for an F1 because it will do full bore too :)

Glad I did get a Chrono as my HW97 is currently running at 816fps with Daystate FT .177 pellets, which it is displaying as FAC .

What would be the best way to sort this out? Leave it cocked overnight? Only problem is its Venom tuned and I remember all the adverts for the Venom F1 mainsprings saying you can leave it cocked for weeks and it wont change the power... What do?

Also, when choosing the pellet weight, it wont allow me to put it as 8.44 grains. I Have to put it as 8.4, is this right? Id have thought it would allow for exact pellet weights?

Waiting for a new Breech seal for my self tuned lightning before I can test that. I dread to think what its kicking out :(.

I have a nice Air Arms S410 Walnut/Rosewood Stock. Pretty nice gun, shame it's a .22, I'll try and get a picture up at some point. Haven't been shooting in a while as me and myxomatosis killed all the rabbits off on my permission and I can't get more till I can drive.

EDIT: Shooting in your garden in most cases is fine, the law only comes into effect once the damage has been caused. Just go to your local police station and ask them to pop round. Make sure you have a good backstop and that the pellets will not leave your garden.

Remove some of the steel adjuster shims inside the gun.

Or, have a coil or two cut off the mainspring. If you're going to do this, make sure the 'cut' is ground flat correctly, not just cut off square.
