*** The all new iPhone 4 thread - Keep all iPhone 4 stuff in here ***

what SIM only deals are u guys on?

i have simplicity at the moment and am just wondering whether its still the one to have...or not?

£20 a month - 12 month contract - unlimited web - unlimited texts - 800mins

contract is up end of this month, or next month (tyring to check but o2 site is understanderbly slow as hell)

Are O2 likely to be offering the same £15 unlock option for the iPhone 4 as they have been previously for PAYG handsets?

i dobut it

the Evo 4G doesnt have an AMOLED screen like the desire.

Sheer stupidity on HTCs part not putting an OLED on it.

The one thing that bugs me about the iPhone is the software though, it was good for a while when it came out but I personally think it's lacking now.

Jobs was quite vague when he went through the OS during the presentation, and I was wondering if there was anything significant other than multi-tasking and folders (lol) being added in that respect?

It's good they've improved the battery quite a bit, other phone manufacturers need to work on this as well, it's a pretty big problem at the moment for some people with smartphones.

I dont think the software will offer anything close to what would be required to turn the heads of happy Android users at the moment, Apple need more OS depth.

I like what they have done with the new iphone, finally doing a few things in the right direction first time. But, some things are still annoying, you know next year 4G will be added to a new model.
I used the HTC Evo the other day and was incredibly impressed - only trouble is, it's a real monster, which is a pro and con in its own right.

What software is it that you'd like Apple to include?

Well a simple request for starters, a home screen of some kind. It's just boring being sent straight into the application menu (time and time again).

More freedom when it comes to settings and controlling various parts of the phone.

Building in Google Navigation would be nice, although it's probably not going to happen and it's a big ask.

Something of a notification tray (like Android), that means you don't have to rely on pop ups and it would allow you to monitor things like email/twitter/facebook and so forth more easily.

It looks like they may have sorted out multi-tasking, but it was incredibly vague so I'll have to wait until the review units are doing the rounds.

I noticed the vast majority of apps are things like, Paypal, simplified websites and games. There aren't many that allow you to adjust how the phone works, like custom launchers and things that can impact on the user interface more (could be part of the home screen improvements they may add in future).

You may well disagree with my points and say that Android is over complicated and you don't want the "hassle", but I think there would be a way either Apple or Google can -

- Simplifly Android so it would appeal more to people who the simple style of the iPhone

- Add more options to the iPhone as I have suggested, so it would appeal to people who want more freedom from the phone

It's hard to judge it based on the information given so far, so I will be looking forward to the reviews.

People screaming "OMG IM BUYING IT" before Jobs had even got through half of his keynote speech are just lunatics :p

It would be a safe bet to assume it will be a great phone, but you've effectively decided before even seeing most of it's features

Anyway, time will tell. When it comes to mobile phones I will simply buy what it best for me, and at the moment that is Android by a country mile, as soon as that changes, I'd happily get an iPhone, I might get one anyway :p

I wonder if they do any deals with iPads, buy both and get one half price? No? Thought not :D

Well for me personally, I haven't owned an iPhone before but I've been wanting to buy one since the end of last year but knew it was pointless with this upgrade coming. So I was pretty much screaming "OMG I'M BUYING IT" from feature 1. :D

What you seem to be asking for is completely against what Apple are all about and the reason why Apple users keep coming back, so I wouldn't hold my breathe for most of what you said. They love to control the whole UX and if they allowed you to modify it, there's no guarantee they wouldn't break it every time they updated the OS which would annoy their customers even more.

And just so you know, multi-tasking was announced and demo'd earlier in the year. If you have a search around I'm sure you'll find a decent video demonstrating how it works.

I agree some of those things are against what Apple are about, but they could at least channel some of them to provide people with more freedom, and ultimately a better phone experience.

Lock screen to app menu is just dull, it's crying out for a home screen for example :( (You may not think so, but I do :p)

Still, I'm only saying this because Android has shown some of the possibilities of more open software, and I think they can only get better in that respect.

I'm not sure if this has already been mentioned. But on O2's site, when you register your interest in the iPhone 4 - it gives you the option to fill in your phone number and address so that if you decide you are upgrading, they can send you a Micro sim before the launch of it so that you can use it straight away.

What i assume they are doing is once they have the information down, they'll email you options you have for upgrading based on your current contract status (using your phone). Pick one and they'll do the right steps, such as send a Micro sim card before launch so you can go buy the phone at a store.

I hope one of these options, if this is how it goes, is for them to send me a Micro sim for my contract so i can go and buy an O2 Pay & Go iPhone 4 and use that. I'm currently locked into a contract i took out with the 3GS last year.

As for the phone itself. My only complaints about the iPhone was the rather old hardware and the lacking cameras. They seem to of addressed these issues, so i'm happy to buy this phone out right, and when the contract runs out i can start again! Have to say, that screen and camera look pretty impressive. What i noticed about Apple is that they /kind of/ played the camera game right, you don't need massive amounts of MP on a phone, instead they're focusing on the sensors for the camera to get the image quality up to standard.

Hopefully it pans out like that, because it is looking great.

I dont want any of that crap, the desire is full of stuff you just DONT need.

People keep coming back to the iphone because of 3 reasons

- It looks fantastic
- Its simplicity to use
- It WORKS ...

The HTC isnt a bad phone but its just too "complicated" trying to do anything and everything its just not what a lot of people want. Im glad they have not changed the software side of things too much and if they did half of the stuff you said then i think you would find apple would have shot themselves in the foot.

The iphone is a massive success, if its not broken dont fix it :)

Spec bump, battery and screen are enough for me to upgrade - the rest it just serious bonuses.

The Evo is just plain fugly and looks too much like a childs toy. Also as with every other 'iPhone Killer' it will be nothing of the sort.

Its amazing that Apple can actually produce something so good that I am willing to pay £180 to get out of my contract early for the second year in a row.

Although I wish one of the operators would spot the pattern and offer a 12 month iPhone contract........

Having played with a desire and obviously my own 3G, I would like a home screen that shows what the weather is for the day, missed calls, texts, the last few emails and what my calendar has for the day. That would be a nice front end. However the rest of it is fine, especially with 'folders'.. I'm a nerd for trying to keep things organised. I want to see what the reviews make of it before I part my money.

I would rather have dynamic icons - like the calendar one which shows the date - so the weather icon could have the current temp and a rain icon or something. I dont like the widget type interface as it looks too Windows'y.

Edit - given the very high res you could probably get a fair bit of info in each icon.

Bit of a dilemma for me, I'm on the iPhone simplicity tariff at the moment with a 3GS and would like to stay on that tariff and upgrade to 4 via buying PAYG. Do you think o2 will provide me with a microsim for my current tariff?

Perhaps a better compromise would be that, so each icon is somewhat animated now that the phone can multi-task... But you could put what I suggested on the lock screen. I know with jailbroken iPhones you can do something similar.
