Has anyone come across Trojan.sirefef yet? It looks to be very recent and it seems very very hard to get rid of. Most good packages can detect it but not fully remove the thing and it puts a 60 second shutdown timer on Windows every time it boots up.

Not even Hiren's BootCD can help because it can't find the processes that would be running when Windows starts properly. I managed to find an ESET tool which as removed some of it - but Security Essentials is now popping up every couple of seconds saying it has removed a threat. Isn't totally fixed :(

Good luck

I'm looking at changing my AV, I current use AVG Premium along side Malwarebytes and just wondering what would be a good alternative for AVG?

If paid you can find a good deal on Bitdefender Internet Security 2012.
For free try Comodo.
You just missed the deal on the new Panda Cloud AV Pro where it was free but check & you might find it cheaper than £24 that the Panda site wants.

Currently using Kaspersky Internet security . MSE i always thought was an anti-malware program rather than an anti virus program for some reason. Seeing so many people using it, might give it a try in the future

Avira are still offering me deals to renew, Should I renew or stick with MSE which I installed?

There are many MSE fans here; I'm not one of them! Slow scans & you have to rely on win firewall [unless you've installed a 3rd party one] Either stick with Avira or you can get Bitdefender Internet Security for £10-08 or KIS for £12-17. Both 3 user/1year. I'd rather pay the <= £1 per month for peace of mind.

Was a Kaspersky PURE user for 2 years but now stick with the cloud using Webroot Secure Anywhere Essentials. Touch wood I have never had a virus on my PC is eight years!!! Touch some more wood!! Webroot variant is tiny and very fast. Never out of date as definitions are on the cloud. For customer builds I use MSE or AVG depends whats on the stick at the time.

Just because one product has a price doesn't mean the one that doesn't is somehow inferior though. peace of mind is one thing but that train of thought is a rather odd one to follow tbh!

Anyway, MSE user since the very beginning and I have never had malware of any description infect my machines. I also run with UAC off on my personal machines although that's a different box of cereal.

Just uninstalled Panda AV. Had a 5 year license but it went mental over the last few days and blocked BF3, then Chrome, then itself.

Their support is poor as well. Gone back to MSE for the moment but will probably try Avast free.

You are obviously a fan of MSE & I'm not & I gave my reasons to which I'll add my brother got infected using it by a spoof AV alert that mimicked MSE.
If you read my previous posts here you'll see I recommend Comodo Internet Security which is free! Its firewall is much better than Win firewall & a decent firewall is part of protection not an optional extra.
If you were quick recently Panda Cloud Pro was being given away free & then at a discount.

I might actually try out some other free Anti-Viruses and see what features they have compared to one and other. I find paid for one(s) the worst because they cost too much and they can't easily be installed like you can with free versions.

I have used eset nod32 for the last 3 years.

Am thinking of changing to Comodo. How heavy is Comodo on the system resources compared to node32?

.

It's quite the memory hog at startup, but it drops down drastically after it's gone through its update procedures.

However, I wouldn't recommend using comodo if you use services like dropbox and google drive since it has a habit of sandboxing the processes every once in a while (it's worse with google drive as it blocks the invisible.vbs file that I think runs when it's updating and it kills the sync application and I have to manually restart it).

Which one are you using at the moment if you don not mind me asking?

Memory hogging is a big no no for me.
